With the number of people who have conquered the backlog (some more than once), is the number of "whole show" listeners really surprising?

Bamn! Now that's what I call customer service! I make one comment in the survey, not a request, or a complaint, just saying how much I liked listening on a Sunday when cleaning my chickens, and WHAM! There it is. This weeks edition, waiting for me on Sunday morning GMT
SMOOCH! Stu, I love you.
Oh and you read my mail! I don't think it's cigs he's looking for way out of the game. We're only a few sessions in, and it was kinda his idea that we should play more. I will talk to him though, and maybe both f them before the next session.

When the hosts were talking about what the RPG market takes in as a whole, I mentioned that Hasbro expects D&D to bring $50 million in revenue or consider it a bastard product line with little corporate support. Here is a link to only one of the sources I could find while re-scanning the net this morning: EN World linkThe split he talks about within WOTC between the MT:G team and the D&D team in competing for Uncle Hasbro's hard earned money is one of the reasons there is this "keep them the hell away from us" mentality that's brewed into M:TG's team and why we don't see cross game support in campaign worlds(a no brainer IMO) or marketing strategy. Some info on crossing the brands HereHasbro just expects D&D to pull in $50 million without it having the rights to D&D licensing for video games or movies. D&D's right have been so split and scattered that Magic is afraid any intellectual property that gets into D&D hands will instantly become the property of some 3rd party that bought the rights in the 80's.

1. HA! We found a new way to get our messages read early, insult the hosts for taking to long to get to the email backlog! 2. I have tried out other ways, including the aforementioned "giving bonuses to the action" and such, but it never sticks....At most in none combat all I've gotten players to talk when I told them that if they in RL talk well enough the difficulty is much lower. This is the 4th game and 3rd system I have played with the group, 2 of the players are very good long timers the rest are close friends of mine who say the love playing but are more often on there phones or w/e not paying attention and its been a LOOOONG HARD FUCKING 4 YEARS TO GET THEM TO THIS POINT! I've used all your advise and the advice of others and its slowly working. The exp thing is the first thing that's stuck, I mostly blame this asshole shit tier GM we had that was one part Monty Hall one part railroading minmaxer, and 100% incompetent, we had for other stuff not working. he'd give us all this cool shit as bribery to keep us in game amongst other things that made any reward system much less rewarding even when he wasn't gming! 3. In one of the emails I sent in, that Stu claims he lost, I told my story about my on going battle with Bi-polar and how shitty of a person I am that I truly only am alive just to play more RPGs, and how this and another podcast (the Order 66 podcast) has made my games much better and as such my shitty pathetic little excuse for a life better!

I don't see how you all put up with players not paying attention to the game while the game is going on. Its like my main rule. In comparison players put all their attention on the game at game time, the GM's do so much outside of game time. Its about respect. If they want to dick around and do something else, I have no problem with it. If they want to call the game and play some video games or just hang out and drink beer, I'm ok with that. MAKE A DECISION. I'm not ok with a "sorta kinda, wishy washy" game. All or none. Sorry that's how I am.
Someone in the chat room said their players play PC games while they are table top gaming... I'd flip my shit over that. Its probably the one thing I'd go Hulk rage on. I only recently relented on having phones anywhere but the "phone basket" for emergency calls, and that's only because apps have become useful instead of a distraction.

Just a quick thing about scrivener: it will assemble you document as a manuscript, but that's not what makes writers lose their minds over it. It's the ability to view the entire book as a series of notecards and rearrange them freely - and mark notes as "not in the book" and have them disappear without actually deleting the paragraph. It's a visual and kinetic writing and organizing process.

I guess it might be a generational thing, see a everyone I know who is insulted by the idea of phones ever being at a table are the older crowd. Also I am guilty of it to to a much lesser extent since I just cant sit still and focus on just one thing for to long! Unless I GM that is.

Yeah, it might be a generational thing. I love my iPhone and iPad and have no problem with people using gadgets to aid the game, and I accept that some people need to respond to a text or call from work or family sometimes, but I cannot accept people playing games or reading Facebook in the middle of an RPG session.
Be here now! We may be playing in imaginary worlds, but this is a social interaction. No, rephrase that. We are playing in imaginary worlds that require the participation of those in the game in a social interaction to maximize the interest and enjoyment of all involved.

I've seen people use cell phones at way more inappropriate situations than RPGs, so I've gotten less curmudgeonly about it lately.
But I do sometimes see it as an indication of how well I'm doing my job as a GM. If someone who normally doesn't have their face buried in it reaches for it during a game, that's a bad sign. If someone who normally does have their face buried in it puts it down, that's a good sign.

Clearly the troll ranger is not a jerk for abandoning his companions to die. The other characters are idiots for not following his lead.

I imagine this opinion will be somewhat unpopular. GMs, your game absolutely does notrequire 100% of my attention 100% of the time. If it does, it means your neglecting the other players. If it's not my turn in combat, or if I'm not in a scene I will pick up my phone and fidget with Drop 7 or some other simple puzzle game. Usually this has the benefit of preventing my mind from wandering and actually keeps me focused on the game. I said usually. I will admit to occasionally devoting too much attention to the phone, but it's net benefit.
If I'm really engaged and having a great time I will probably post about it during the game when someone does or says something really cool.
As far as the knitters go, I know a few people who knit. They do it on auto pilot. They are more than likely still paying attention to the game.

andreasdavour is a man after my own heart. I love LOVE LOVE the Toolbox series from AEG. I've used it many many times to make characters, NPCs, locations, etc. Its very handy. It is indeed put out by the same company as L5R and is no longer in print but can be purchased via Drive Thru RPG.

I've known many knitters in my day, and ya its kind of an auto-pilot thing. Now if someone found a knitting simulator on their phone... I just don't know how I'd handle it. Its anarchy. Also, i'm 31. Is that "older crowd" yet for hating phones at a table? Might be. I'm not a phone hater, I'm a "attention not on the game" hater. Like I said, maybe a bit more than the average GM, but it works at my table(backhanded insults be damned), and my table is well liked.

I keep all my RPG books in PDF on my phone, tablet & laptop. I have players using the EotE dice app (which is a lot cheaper than buying the packs of dice from FFG!), and it's always fun for the players to have a chat client running for GM & player messages. In general, I don't mind devices at the table; I might draw the line if any of my players were playing WoW or Angry Birds!
