For those that don't know - 'Sprog' is a chiefly British vernacular for 'child'. Sprog concerned is a lively 12 going on 13 who wants me to GM a game for him and his Mother (my better half) . . . because the games we usually play a bit too mature in themes to warrant his inclusion (ie: we don't start til either he's in bed or engrossed with PS3 in bedroom)and it's be good to do more things together. I'll admit that my CRPG itch watched scratched a long time ago and I find it difficult to get engaged with them anymore . . . sort of play a bit, get annoyed by the story limitations and end up just going ''meh' done with that now'. He's played a bit of pathfinder previously, but not a lot, and has started to realise the limitations of the likes of SkyRim and MMORPGs compared to TTRPGs. Mother has previously vetoed allowing him to watch Alien until he's older (he did ask why I was excited when I came back from the shops a few months ago, having procured the complete collection on blueray at halfprice): despite my protests that I was the same age when I saw it (we won't mention the nightmares the night after :/ - hey it's part of growing up isn't it?). So I was thinking of maybe running him through Alien with the serial numbers filed off: using Traveller . . . he won't be aware of any of the tropes and the horror aspect? he loves Slenderman, so I'll say no more . . . . Just wondered if the greater community think this is a reasonable idea and do I risk ruining his first time watching the actual film? (once I can get Mother to acquiesce to both our pleas that 'the time is right') Aaron

That's definitely a reasonable idea. But if you don't want to spoil Alien for him, perhaps you could yoink the plot of some other, more obscure tale.
Ice Pirates - After the Great Wars destroyed all but one of the water planets, water is now the most coveted commodity in the universe. The Templars of Mithra now control the remaining water world and rule the galaxy with an iron fist. Vast cargo ships transport ice from Mithra to the Known Worlds. Of course, there are those who don't wish to live under the Templars' rule...
You could go as heavy as Dune, or as light & silly as Lilo and Stitch. Lots to choose from.

I can't argue with your reasoning. Do you recall TSR's SPI board game Sniper:Bug Hunter? I LOVED that game.
But this is my challenge: shouldn't you MAKE him start with D&D? WE all had to. (Granted I only played a few sessions before finding the twin Nirvana's of Traveller and Runequest...

Hi there I'm the mother of said sprog...he's played D&D before and does have a good grasp of the game and what it entails. It's classes he gets mixed up with really, previously in pathfinder he tried to play a rogue like a fighter so it didn't turn out well to say the least. The next game he played a Ranger and he was able to play much better as the differences had been explained better (this was all at least 3 years ago and the parents on this forum will be aware of the huge changes when offspring reach their teens) I don't know much about traveller at all, so I will be a complete noob also. The fact it's sci-fi appeals to me and I just know it will appeal to sprog also ....but he's still not allowed to watch Alien until he's at least 14...and that's final.

Welcome to the boards lunarfeline, I sense you'll fit in just fine. I wilfully ignored Kainguru's reference to Pathfinder I'll admit, so the boy's done his time. Traveller is a treat, especially as (Nigel Tufnell voice) "no classes" Just as an experiment both, I asked the wife about approving the watching of Alien for my 13 yo. It didn't go well Kainguru apparently "maybe 16, given I don't want to watch it again" is The Law in this house.

@fredix - they (mothers) don't understand boys do they? (mind you I'm not a very good role model given my reaction to a distressed sprog confessing to earning his first detention was to laugh raucously and congratulate him in what I expect to be but the first of many . . . ) Aaron Sent from my Surface 2 using Tapatalk

LOL - avoiding gender politics, boys do tend to be a bit more gruesome than mothers wish to believe . . . rather I have fond memories of a youth full of doing all the things mum told me not too Aaron

About that...I excitedly sat my nephew 13 in front of the blu ray collection. Made it through Alien (watched it in the morning) I recall just seeing the FUCKING TRAILER as a young kid and having nightmares for days after. Next up ALIENS! easy peesey we quoted Bill Paxton all afternoon. Even went and played some Alien vs Predator video game and screamed "LETS ROCK!" A fair amount. Then good ol' Uncle Curt turned on ALIEN3 and say what you will about it, but Fucking Fincher can make a freaky deeky scary movie. And we watched it at night...in the dark...and it was raining. My poor little nephew had nightmares so bad he awoke screaming. "We don't have any guns!!!" So yeah sometimes a momma tank girl knows what's best. Although if you two wish to continue to hash it out for us the gawking public please do so as I find it highly entertaining...

Ya see I think the nightmares are healthy - part of growing up, like telling each other ghost stories at midnight in local graveyard. Did we shit ourselves up? Yep . . . The mad dash back to the friends house where we'd had a 'gaming sleepover' (the midnight excursion being a scheduled break) and the supervising adults? None the wiser as far as we could tell. Ah, the joys of youthful folly . . . It's why the Slenderman thing has gone so spectacularly viral - we all love a good scare Maybe 13 and a half for Alien - he did laugh at 'that' scene in Scanners? ok yes he laughed at the exploding head scene in scanners, but I know for a fact he would get upset if he saw a an alien exploding out of a dog which is in the Alien 3. Before you say he should only watch Aliens, No. If he's going to watch them, He's going to do it properly which means in chronological order
