It was my understanding... that there'd be no math... in this debate.

Now, I know this is probably just a coincidence, but a friend once pointed out/made the joke, upon learning that someone was running a GURPS game at the convention we created, that "must be from the West coast".
Which the guy running the game was. And then it just happened that none of my friends that I knew all grew up in the east coast, all avoided GURPS like the plague.
I stick to this joke.

So RPG preferences appear, like some music styles, to be regional in the USA? I know that in the olden days the likes of Runequest found favour in the UK and Europe. White dwarf magazine used to frequently duel stat their scenarios to reflect this trend Aaron

I've simply had a better experience with GURPS than any other system so far: - D&D/Pathfinder is fun, but it's more of a numbers-balancing game than anything else. The roleplaying is often just a thin veneer over it. - Fate seemed nice, but everything was too hand-wavy and abstract, especially since I am not tough on my players. Also, the game mechanic takes place on a narrative meta-level above the game world, so I felt it hindered immersion. - Savage Worlds is really fun (probably my second favorite system), but often it can feel like the RPG equivalent of a Michael Bay movie. Well, that sounds too harsh. Maybe more like an old-school Schwarzenegger movie. - GURPS had a lot of barriers to entry, but they were nearly all mental on my part. Once I found the right guides to understanding it, (thanks mook) the system turned out to be pretty simple. And I can't imagine a situation where GURPS can't be used. I might run into some snags at some point, but I'm just enjoying the system a lot more. As far as regional studies go, I'm in Pennsylvania, originally from Virginia.

Our Southern California cons always have a good GURPS representation. That's due in part to having a very active Men in Black contingent out here.
Even so, PFS dwarfs any GURPS presence.

It's amusing, because the reasons you listed for FATE, are the reasons I enjoy it and Powered by the Apocalypse so much. I know at our local NJ convention I think we'll have like 1 or 2 GURPS games, the usual D&D Encounters, and PFS, and the rest across the board, but a lot of story games.
