Okay, I know we're all about beer here at Happy Jack's. But my daughter is 6 weeks old now and apparently has no intention of sleeping more than two hours a night, which is making work really tough. I've never been a coffee guy, but I'm at the end of my rope here, so I'm fishing for suggestions on how to get a good cup of joe.

Crabber style...grind coffee. Grind more coffee...brew. If spoon stands up straight in mug your doing it right.

If you're brewing at home and not wanting to spend a lot of money then my recommendation is to buy a cafetiere (French press) and then try a few different beans until you find some you like. It's definitely worth spending a little more on the beans if you can as it does make a difference. When it comes to brewing there are two tricks I've found make a big difference. First don't use water that has just boiled, let it cool for 30s - 60s before adding to avoid burning the coffee. Second try a range of brewing times, a lot of advice says 3 minutes, I personally prefer around 4.
If you can afford to spend a more then there are plenty of options, I've heard good things about the aeropress or you could always splash out and get an espresso machine for that strong and instant hit.

Someone did a study a few years ago on caffeine contents and 7-11 brand came up highest. So if your goal is to over caffeinate, go for that.

Overcaffienating I can do - and have done - with energy drinks. Tastes vile, and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack a few times.

I use a Kuerig. or however you spell it.. ^.^
I tried a french press and never got what I considered drinkable coffee out of it. But I am... very particular about the taste of my coffee. The Kuerig does it perfectly for me.

I do like grinding my own. Ended up getting a burr grinder as the blade style occasionally produced too much powder and plugged things up. Don't know that I'm making good coffee, I like it and that's enough.

I am a coffee lover. Whole Bean is the only way to go and you want to grind it right before you brew it. Ground Coffee loses it’s flavor and caffeine potency. I get that Keurig tries to mitigate this with vacuum sealed cups, but you also need a silly machine. Machine.A Cheap Mr. Coffee will do the job. I have had cheap machines and expensive ones. I would stay away from the cheapest models that have one single nozzle the water comes out of onto the coffee. I prefer a more widespread irrigation. Some people swear by French Press. It is more the process that adds to the coffee than anything flavorful. I use my Press mainly when the power goes out. It does add a touch of class to an after dinner drink, but in the morning it can be a hassle. Of course there's also the old Percolator as well. Whichever you choose will be fine. Whole BeanA Darker Roast will give you a stronger flavor. Most people think this means they are getting more caffeine. This is false. The longer you roast coffee you actually cook the caffeine out of it. Light and medium roasts have more caffeine and a flavor that is less bold. I tend to buy a Kona Blend (light) or Colombian (medium) most often. But you may prefer a different coffee. Never buy flavored coffee. You may like a Pumpkin Peppermint Chocolate Coffee. It’s fine. You sickening me, but it's fine. What you want is the flavored syrup. It is sweet, destroys the coffee flavor, and generally taste like it is advertised. Flavored coffee is like flavored medicine. It’s disgusting and sure as hell doesn’t taste like snozzberries. GrindingBurr is the better choice, but pricier than a blade one. The Burr grinder is more even and your granules will be about the same. With a Blade you take what you can get. StoringCool and Dark Place. Heat and Light ruin coffee beans. So all those stores where you see beans behind clear plastic. Garbage. Also you never know how long it’s been since they emptied out the bin before pouring new coffee on top. Some people put the beans in the freezer. This is also not optimal. The freezing moisture can extract oils and aroma from the beans. Finally I want to talk about Cold Brew Coffee. If you are not a coffee drinker this may be for you and if you are a coffee drinker this is amazing. Essentially you coarsely grind the beans, put them in less water than you normally would for brewing a pot of coffee, let it steep for 12 to 24 hours. Then strain into closeable container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Serve over ice with cream and flavored syrup if you like. (sugar won't dissolve as well as simple syrup) The final product blew my mind the first time I made it. It is not like some terrible Starbucks Iced Coffee where they just put hot coffee over ice and you end up with this watery bitter blech. The coffee is smooth. It’s strong, but not bitter. Plus it still packs a punch. Now the easiest way to strain it is with a french press, but many people on the internet have come up with ways of doing it without one. I have used store bought pre-ground coffee for this and it is still good. Since you use less water than you would in a machine it is pretty strong. The problem is the grind is too fine and a little of the grit will flow through a french press. You will want a good container. I got this bottle with a stopper from IKEA for $3.99. It is great. Cold Brew Coffee Recipes Without a French Press. Instead 2 liter bottleNo machine, Mesh Strainer. The one I go by.

I love the french press for camping.
I know this is blasphemy....but old coffee, that is to say, stuff that isn't exactly fresh brewed.....makes for great Iced coffee. Just throwing that out there.....It's a legitimate option for people in hotter climates with fridge space.........

I'm in the humid hell known as Florida. Old coffee is the Pabst Blue Ribbon of Iced Coffee. I've had it and I'll have it again, but I'll never love it. Give the Cold Brew a shot.

The coffee I drink is the strength of the base of the pillar. It is the mouse shadow in the second moon...it is the water of life...er... Sorry. Every time someone asks a question that starts with, "Tell me about..." I start thinking of Dune quotes. It doesn't get much to start that train rolling, but I've been known to say the Mentat's prayer while drinking my first cup of Joe in the morning. I usually go in for Pete's. Major Dickason's blend was an old standby for a while, but now I consider that one too heavy and acidic for my personal Ph level. Pete's now makes a few medium roasts that aren't bad and easily found in supermarkets here in Cali. Dunno about the availability in your area, so ymmv. You can order from them online here: www.peets.com/coffee/by-roast/coffee-shop-by-category-medium-roast.htmlDomingo is nice and doesn't taste burnt. That's the biggest thing for me. Well, that and setting my mind in motion...

Thanks for posting a procedure, I'll give it shot. Since I have the bur grinder, in theory I should be able to limit the too find of stuff getting through a french press as I can up the grind size a bit. I feel like I should try sampling different coffees again. A while back I happened to stop switching around on 8oclock coffee. (Too lazy to look beyond what's in local supermarkets.)

Holy crap. Some of you love coffee. I didn't realize there was so much to it.
By the way, I hate it.
Good read though.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. By the beans of java the thoughts acquire speed. The hands acquire a shaking, the shaking becomes a warning, it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.
