I recently read an interesting free PDF from roleplayingtips.com about GMing computer hacking "GM Tips: COmputer Hacking in RPG". I wonder how other referees handle this type of task in Mongoose Traveller? How much abstraction do they use and what sorts of details? How do you imagine the future of computer networks and interfaces? Which SF novels do you look to for inspiration on this, for example the early works of William Gibson? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_gibsonThanks, Lindsay Jackson.

Generally, I'm a big hacker guy, in RP. I like the cyberspace battles, etc.
Traveller really doesn't seem about that, though. Big hacker fights don't seem to match the flavor, at least for my game of Traveller. I've got one guy that's a computer nut, and can hack. I just have him roll Computer, with varying modifiers based on security. And I estimate a time frame. That's about it, I'm afraid.

I agree Pukkatukka. I've never gotten the feeling of cyberpunk while reading through Traveller stuff.
If I wanted to challenge my players to pull off some sort of major hack, I'd probably have most of the work not involve computers. These days a large portion of successful hacking uses human engineering to get their foot in the door. (Passwords written down, suckering them over the phone, executing Trojan key loggers...) And the books seem to really encourage that sort of thing.
The main book does talk briefly about hacking in using security programs, and it taking days to complete. But the scoundrel book talks more about getting into the real world prep work. For me, an intrusion in Traveller is likely going to feel like the prep done in Ronin or Sneakers.
To really get cyberpunky in MGT I'd probably have to read some crunch for stuff like Shadowrun or GURPS Cyberpunk. I'd then take that knowledge as inspiration for house ruling MGT.

I agree. The social hacks seem a lot more fun for the whole group to boot.
