Can a guard be guarded? Can 2 people guard each other?
Just curious because I am taking a page out of Stu's book and making everyone the same family (Phoenix). There are 2 bushi who theoretically as free actions can guard each other at +5TN, if I am reading this right. Errata had nothing on it I could find.

I don't see why not. There's no reason why two bushi can't guard each other, and when surrounded by enemies, it's a viable tactic. Being Phoenix however, I'd expect them to guarding the Loremasters and Shugenja!

I'd agree with jimbohawkins that there's no reason why they couldn't, it's just that most of the time there either isn't a need for it. Though now that you mention it I'm imagining a sort of sibling combo fighting style using it that would be quite thematically appropriate.

Nothing preventing both taking the action from what I've seen.

It's not really a mechanics question. The Shiba Bushi School are trained to protect their charges, who will be mainly Shugenja. So if they want to protect each other, that's fine. If there are other non-bushi Phoenix present, they'll guard them, dependent on the battlefield, of course. The game sounds like fun. I took a similar leaf out of Stu's book and have a group playing a Mantis Clan vassal family, based out of Mura Sabishii Toshi.

Yep, two samurai can Guard each other and the Shiba can exploit their school technique to good effect with this. Likewise the all Phoenix game sounds fun and entertaining and the Inukai game inspired me to run a theme I'd been meaning to for ages with all Scorpion.

One thing I would point out is that Shiba bushi utilising their school technique don't actually gain any benefit. They can guard as a free action, but it only gives the recipient +5 to their TN. The action of guarding applies a penalty of -5 to the TN of the guarding character, however, so there is no net benefit. Guarding a simple action, which everyone can do, will gain each bushi a +5 to their TN (+10, but -5), but will cost low rank characters their attack in that round. I suppose they could both adopt Defence or full Defence to gain even more protection though.

I forgot about the -5 tn to guarding so yeah it would not have a benefit.

For those interested in Guard Bonus tricks, I would point out the Daidoji Bushi school (Core Book Page 111), and their rank 2 technique. Two Daidoji Bushi standing back to back in the middle of a melee can be very, very hard to hit.
