I have only recently started running savage worlds and I do love the system and players are starting to come around.
1) The 5 Card Hand Why: I had it as an idle thought and blathered about it at the table. The players decided they loved the idea. We tried it and it has saved their bacon twice now. Rule: All players keep their used initiative cards, they do not count any card they did not use themselves. If at any point the combat goes 5 rounds without a joker being dealt, then the players (and GM) compare their 5 Card Stud hand. The owner of the winning hand gains a bennie, removes shaken, loses a point of fatigue and heals 1 damage. This is seen in character as a Heroic resurgence of the character in question. If the GM wins then either a Wild Card gains these effects or some form of aid arrives for the villains.
2) 5 Suite Action Bonus Why: The one thing that has happened is that my players started to get less imaginative in their actions during combat. I doubt this had anything to do with the system but I added this rule as an incentive to be imaginative in combat. Rule: You must use a five suite deck. The one I have is the standard suites + stars. Each round of combat the player gains an initiative card as per usual. They gain a +1 bonus to any action that the card's suite is related to. Spades= Agility, Stars = Smarts, Hearts = Spirit, Clubs = Strength, & Diamonds = Vigor.

Awesome idea! Another grand idea! I know many of my players do the same - getting lazy about descriptions and just wanting to role those dice, but this can appeal to folks to get creative in their actions for mechanical benefits, and I like it. I know there is a game called Five Crowns (I picked up a copy at a thrift store for a $1) that has those stars: What deck did you use?
