Part of the show was talking about campaign endings which ties in with the fact that I just finished the L5R actual play. My understanding is that real life has gotten in the way of the L5R game which is quite sad. Has there been any talk of writing an epilogue of some kind? I've been wanting to pick stu 's brain on the machinations and dangling threads that are left in the Inukai version of Rokugan, partly because I just started running an L5R game and have been using the Asai Valley as the location of Winter Court. I've had a great deal of fun learning about how stu and Bill Roper Roper have crafted Eldemy and Star Wars Traveller and the suspense of never learning the ultimate fate of my favorite samurai is killing me. Speaking of L5R, I'm going to need some help. Started a pair of L5R games and one has gone.... strange. Please drop by the L5R forum and help because I have no idea where to go. Another point: KRIS HYYYYYPEE! Super pumped to hear another perspective on the podcast and Kris and her dysfunctional family life has made Eldemy so amazing. That and Bill and Tyler solving every problem with "You should probably remove that eye" Super glad to have another host in the mix.

Thanks for the shoutout tyler regarding our 5e game. And here I was thinking I'm sucking it at roleplaying my monk.

Was this episode with the email about the Power Rangers game and Gestalt forms (I've been driving a bunch listened to several episodes back to back). If it was, Cartoon Action Hour has all the rules you'd ever need for Gestalt forms (and they are easily portable to any system).
It breaks down a bit like this: -At character gen, everyone takes the trait "Gestalt Form." -Also at character gen, everyone works together to build the form on a point buy system where the form is made off number of points a regular character is, plus (about) 20% more points. So the form is more powerful than any single character. - to fit the genre and ensure the players don't jump into the form immediately, the characters have to have taken a specific amount of damage first before the transformation is available. CAH uses "setback tokens" in place of damage or hit points, but once the party, as a whole, has taken total setback points equal to the number of characters in the gestalt plus 1, the form gets unlocked. - once transformed, everyone still gets their combat turn, but they each get to act as the form (meaning the super powered form gets 3 or 4 turns each round, uber strong). - damage is handed out individually (I'm playing the left leg, so all left leg damage goes to me). If a character is taken out, the form doesn't suffer at all (left leg destroyed but it can still walk), but that player doesn't get turns (weakening the form by a turn each round).
It's a slick system.

On growing Magical Items: there's some things to check out and some things to keep in mind. First, Pathfinder Unchained has an entire system on items that get better with players. I think they're called Dynamic Magical Items. It has a list of examples as well as item creation rules for them. If you can track down a copy of the book or PDF it might be helpful. Secondly, in 5e, Magical Weapons are insanely strong and the game is balanced for their scarcity. +1 Weapons are level 7ish, +2 is 13ish and +3 weapons are artifacts. Beyond that the game leans on 'immunity/resistance to damage from nonmagic weapons' a lot. I actually use -1 weapons which are magical, so they cut though immunity, but are a die type smaller than weapons of their normal size (d4 short swords, d10 great swords) for low level characters to give someone magical damage to beat ghosts. If you give you party a ton of magic weapons at lower levels with the idea that they'll grow you are completely circumventing a lot of potentially challenging encounters by just giving everyone magical damage, so you might want to change those encounters. Other than that, minor effects are fantastic, as tyler and Probie Tim brought up. Inventive and situational effects are really fun to play with. Perhaps we can create a list of minor magical effects in the D&D subforum?

I can't believe Stu didn't recommend GURPS for Twilight 2000. I think it would be ideal. GURPS is at its best with modern settings.
Magical items: A big part of the setting of Earthdawn are the magical items. You can imbue them with more power as you gain levels, essentially leveling them up as you go. This encourages you to stick with the same sword for a long time, instead of going shopping every time you gain a level.

Twilight 2000 was a super gritty and super crunchy post apocalypse military based RPG. It was modified for theTraveller universe in Traveller: 2300ad which was pre imperium traveller ie the first Terran expansion from Sol. They then used those mechanics, modified again, for Traveller: The New Era. Classic Traveller was described by GDW as 'Space Opera' vs the Twlight 2000 (and variants) as Simulationist (read 'gritty') . . . Savage Worlds really wouldn't suit the flavour of the original setting: though (as noted above) GURPS would. Aaron

I thought Traveller: 2300AD was an entirely separate continuity from Traveller. I also seem to recall 2300 was the future of the Twilight 2000 world. I guess it doesn't really matter.
If you wanted to play Twilight 2000 with the original system, I would recommend Version 2.2. If you just want the setting material, any of the Version 2 implementations would be my choice.
I would avoid Twilight 2013 altogether. The system sucked, and so did the timeline of events leading to the war. The chain of events goes something like this: Terrorists operating out of Belarus kill a bunch of people in France, France nukes terrorist training in Belarus, some time later Russia invades Belarus for unrelated reasons, and since Belarus is now part of Russia they attack France for nuking their country. Even with Putin, that really stretches credulity.
I think either GURPS or Savage Worlds would be a good fit. It just depends on what you want the game to feel like.
Random side note, Twilight 2000 and its supplements had some of the best equipment porn in the history of gaming.

I checked up on Twilight 2013 - the company went bust in 2010. Unfortunately post 2010 google searches tend to throw up sparkly vampire shite and totally different porn (who woulda thought a werewolf and a vampire getting it on . . . :/ ) Aaron

When Tyler was impersonating Jackie Mason and Tim said it sounded like the aardvark, as it happens Jackie Mason WAS the voice of the aardvark in the cartoons.
