Hi.
I had a player that recently asked me if she could assign fewer skill points to her character and instead take more edges. I said sure, since I couldn't see how it would break the game, but I wanted to double check what other savage gms thought about it.

Eh, I would be cautious of allowing a player to have an extra edge.
What's this player trying to accomplish that they need to do this? Skill points are actually really important.

I have no problem with it. If they stick with standard character generation then as soon as they have 5 xp they're just going to buy the edge. If you cost them skills now and then they get edges, when they get 5 xp they'll buy up skills. It all going to come out in the wash.

I agree with Lowkeyoh. Just require 2 sp for an edge. Eventually they will have to balance needing the required skills so they will need some skill points. And if you want then to eventually invest in the skills... Make then come up more in the game.

Edges are very powerful in Savage Worlds, even more so than Powers. If you look carefully, most Edges side step core combat mechanics: like adding bonuses to recover from Shaken, increasing Parry, and adding extra starting Bennies. The core rules aren't broken. There's no need to change character creation in Savage Worlds. If you want higher powered characters, apply the Born a Hero Setting rule in Savage Worlds Deluxe. This allows characters to ignore Rank restrictions for Edges taken at character creation.

I want to know what the player wants to do. I have a feeling it's totally possible within the rules as written.

I want to know what the player wants to do. I have a feeling it's totally possible within the rules as written. She isn't a power gamer or a munchkin. She just found several edges that she liked and had a hard time choosing. That's why it didn't bring me any perturbation to say yes. I also feel that it should be "possible", but the rules lay out very clear steps how to do your character. Distribute your trait points - distribute your skill points - take up to one major and two minor hindrances - raise skills, traits och take edges with the points from the hindrances. I can't find anywhere that you can choose to take less skills, and I feel like a dirty feel-good sports movie when I think thoughts like "the rules don't say that you aren't allowed" "Hey mister! The rules don't say that you aren't allowed to have a three legged puppy in a wheelchair on your lacrosse team!"I think I maybe not will encourage it, but not disallow it when a player asks for more edges in the future. I often compare Savage Worlds to GURPS, and this wouldn't have been a problem in that system.

I would be cautious about adding extra edges, they are the most powerful part of any character. It should all wash out but it might cause imbalances at the start. All I would say is use with caution.

You could use the custom races to make a race that had 2 Edges & with Hinderances take another 2 Edges. She couldn't want more that 4 Edges.

Also, I wasn't trying to suggest you were playing SW wrong or anything. Sorry if that came across to you. I think we're all big fans of SW, but we're fans of fun first. If giving your player extra Edges enhances their fun then go for it!

Also, I wasn't trying to suggest you were playing SW wrong or anything. Sorry if that came across to you. No worries. That thought never occurred to me. If I hadn't wanted a discussion, with people that could have different opinions than me, I wouldn't have posted my question in the first place. :-)

there is a setting rule in a few setting books, that lets you take a second major hindrance in addition to your first major and your two minors. and you get points for it. you can find it in the RWBY conversion, and with a human, half elf or Avion, you can have 4 Edges by using said setting rule.
