I'm planing on starting a game next month and have been making a lot of characters for practice. What I would like to know is if everyone rolls attributes per RAW or have house rules. I've considered house ruling the attribute rolls as roll 3d6 and drop the lowest. Or roll 2d6 and assign to attribute of choice. Or scrap the set and start over if the character has more negative attribute dm's then positive.
Thoughts?
Thank you, The Barney

Not that I have a lot of experience, but I've yet to see anyone go completely RAW. I've seen stuff like:
Roll 2d6 7 times and toss out the lowest
Roll 2d6 9 times and toss out the highest 1 and lowest 2
Roll 2d6 6 times, twice and keep the batch you like best.
One that I've not seen but I kind of like the idea is to allow a couple re-rolls during character creation that can be used anywhere including attributes.
That all being said, given the more permanent nature of the attribute numbers, using a selection of arrays is sounding like a decent idea to me.

I'm playing in a monthly Travaller game now and my DM decided to have us roll 2d6 six times and then if we had any rolls of five or lower we could reroll those once. I for instance ended up with a final set of 7, 6, 6, 10, 11, 9. I personally like this method alot as it still keeps the random element of the CC.

When I started my Traveller game, every player had three re-rolls to use at any time during chargen -- on attribute rolls, career rolls, etc.
I *think* everyone rolled 2d6 6 times and assigned them as they liked.

Okay, just double-checked, and the RAW say roll 2D6, and assign them to the characteristics "in any order." The way I did it is just like that. *If* someone got a set that was nothing but 0DMs and negative DMs, I told them they could reroll, but had to reroll the entire set. I think one really felt awful about her stats, so she took me up on it. But that was it. I feel like this isn't an issue so much, these days. I mean, my players still like to whine/brag about their numbers. But it's a random system. The random attributes is part of it. Recently, a player retired one character, and made a new one. His initial rolls, he had a 12 and a 2. He was psyched! --Pukka Tukka

I'd be temped to put the 2 in social and make a name that's some sort of play on Dave Lister.

I'd be temped to put the 2 in social and make a name that's some sort of play on Dave Lister. He did put the 2 in Soc, actually. But by the end, it was a 4 (and he has Leadership 2, so it's pretty funny). The character as a whole is hilarious. He starts on his homeworld as a Drifter/Barbarian, and fails his first survival role, due to betrayal. So he decides someone sold him into slavery, and he basically got impressed into service with some space pirates. Becomes a Rogue/Pirate. Fails his first survival role. Due to betrayal! So then he decides to enlist in the Marines, fails to get in, applies for the draft, gets into the Army. Spends the next 28 years in a *very* successful career in Army/Cavalry. Gets the highest NCO rank possible, and does really well, except that he loses an eye. But after 28 years of (supposedly) driving around in a tank, the two skills he *doesn't* have? Drive or Gunnery.

Really? No-one uses chargen in traveller (assuming mongoose) RAW?? Would't RAW work the same way as career rolls? You pick a table/stat and roll. I would make the player finish their character RAW and if they are really unhappy with it roll a new one. Good way to get fully statted out, very flawed, villain NPC's which have some history with the PC's. Also - if you use the old-school rules that come with it where you can die on a survival roll - then if they are rolling badly you get to watch the player pray their character dies on their next roll (by the way - these 'dead' PC's are also a good way to get NPC's)

Sounds like fun Maxinstuff, but just introducing a game with such random characters makes a group jumpy. I want to give them some kind of safety net, like the bennies so they at least feel like they have some control. If they aren't willing to make characters, I wont have anyone to kill!
