Jackers!
I'm gearing up to start a new Savage Worlds G+/Roll20 game. It's a post-apoc game, but at some point the characters might get the opportunity to learn magic; shamanistic magic is one of those types. I really like the shamanistic magic AB in Solomon Kane, but I don't like the backlash table. It's very similar to "no power points" in the Deluxe rules, but the 2d6 damage on a backlash doesn't work for me either.
So here's what I'm thinking: use the Solomon Kane AB for shamanistic magic as written, but instead of the crazy backlash table there, or the 2d6 damage backlash from "no power points", what about just having a backlash do 1 wound straight up? Anyone see any issues with that?
Thanks!

Can they spend a Bennie to try and soak the wound like any other wound?

Why not have a failure produce a shaken result; failing multiple arcane rolls in a round will produce multiple shaken results, and thus multiple wounds?
Unless you plan to make healing easier than the rules as written, I'd be a little more gentle about handing wounds around like that for an ongoing game.
I'd also look at Beasts & Barbarians for some help, if you have access to that. I can't cite anything at the moment, but I seem to recall there being something useful in its arcane backgrounds.

I would never inflict an automatic wound in place of a random damage result on a player in Savage Worlds.Roll the bones, he can always drop a Benny to attempt a Soak roll. If you wanted to port it to Savage Worlds RAW I would suggest applying the additional Miracles backlash in a No Power Points situation because Miracles and Shamanism are linked to the same Attribute.

I would be okay with it.
Backlash has the potential to do no wounds, or multiple wounds, or even kill if something goes severely wrong.
Having a backlash of one wound is serious, but it is still balanced. It's almost like the spirits saying they are taking a "standard price" which fits for some theories on spirit magic.
I personally would let them use their bennies to still try and soak. Pass it off as a "Well, you apologized, so... I'll let you off... this time."
Also, if the players are aware of the risk and consequence, then it is still the same basic informed choice as the rolled damage. More so, actaully, since they have an exact number. Less of a gamble, and more of a direct trade.

What are you wanting to accomplish with a backlash in your setting? I'm with Jerrod in that I would be leery of just imposing 1 wound on them. We have this amazing and fun randomizer that can create all manner of interesting and different results so I would tend to want to lean on that.
Under what circumstances does a backlash occur? What is the desired result (gm point of view)? What is the feared result (player point of view)?
