We just had a family gathering over the weekend and my cousin and I talked about RPGs. He's played some D&D and I've played all kinds of stuff. When he gets back we are going to try and Skype in some games. So I'm wondering what are some good games for getting him into other things other than D&D? I've got games like Fate, Savage Worlds, L5R, Iron Kingdoms, some Old World Of Darkness, and a bunch of other games.

Savage worlds is such a quick fun system to pick up. And then it makes so many settings east to adapt, good for online games.

I second savage worlds. Basically anything that does not require some form of battle mat would be hood

Savage Worlds for reasons that have already been stated. Super easy to set up, super easy to learn, and super easy to flavor to your liking.

Savage Worlds is a great starter game, but if he gets super insistent on battle maps or grids, all is not lost! You can use Roll 20, or you can set up a google doc spreadsheet with square cells in a pinch

That is something I'll have to talk with him with. The group I play with we don't use any minis. So I'm used to it but not sure about him. Good call on roll 20 thanks.

I'd personally suggest the old West End Games Ghostbusters RPG. It's simple, quick, and you can get everything you need to play right here. All you need is some D6's.

That's a good idea too. Been looking for a copy of ghostbusters for a while too, thanks!

Because I'm a zealot of late, I'll plug Spectrum Games "Cartoon Action Hour." Requires no minis, everything's resolved by single rolls with narration before and after. Plays super fast mechanically, and can be adapted to any genre that's slightly action-y with the built in tool kit. Free preview: www.spectrum-games.com/uploads/1/2/3/7/12374018/primer.pdf

Thanks HourEleven, I've looked at it before. Guess the art has always thrown me from picking it up. I'll take a closer look now.

The art is terrible in all of their books (except Big Crime, because it's film noir film stills), but they are three person indie company, I think, so I can forgive it.

Yeah in that case I can't blame them. Hell its way better than what I can draw. (Can't draw at all)

FATE, Savage Worlds and Cypher are all easy to Run and easy to stat characters for if you don't mind characters of similar party roles feeling very similar. i would probably tell you that FATE and Savage Worlds have a lot of acquired taste because you have to come up with a lot of the flavor yourself. Cypher has simpler d20 mechanics, but all 3 will tend to feel very awkward to a player coming from a primarily D&D or D20 background. Simplest and most nearly freeform would be FATE, most mechanically customizeable of the 3 is probably Cypher.

I second Cypher, and throw in Feng Shui (And the new one is Fantastic).
Fate and Savage worlds are both fantastic, but I sort of miss tossing people fate chips/bennies in a physical sense. lol
