having watched mission impossible rogue nation, realizing how typecasted Tom Cruise was, comparing how every actor has a role or archetype they signifficantly identify strongly with to players at my own tables who typecast themselves, including myself i came across an idea for a topic
many of us typecast ourselves as a set of character archetypes we play in some form or other, and i am sure you could compare even the different skins across genres
please describe character patterns you noticed among yourself and your fellow players that seem to consistently come up
using myself as an example
i play in a group of sojourners that includes
a Guy who always tries to play sneaky covert operations characters like they were elite soldiers
a guy who always plays short, vicious survivalists with an intense greed and even more intense sense of integrity and loyalty
myself and my fiancee play short and underweight females with well maintained appearances, who often happen to rarely be a normal human with normal circumstances, who are often bound in chains of trust, often to an NPC patron who uses them to keep tabs on a group of murderhobos, are often (but not always) support oriented builds.rarely neglect their own combat ability, and prioritize style over power unless they can get a lesser form of power with a lesser form of compromise to their style and our characters tend to have more flaws than the entirety of our saturday group party combined
i know somebody who never plays the same character build twice in a row, and i knew somebody who always played lizardfolk samurai barbarian mishmashes that were simply barbarians in dresses with katana

Listening to the actual plays I've noticed that stork likes to play inconsiderate pricks.

I've typed out three totally different replies to this but thought better of it after each.

I saw a pretty interesting post..... Somewhere, I'm sorry, where I saw it completely escapes me right now..... About tips for players.
One of the tips was "play your character, not yourself".
And then there was a lively discussion about whether players should play very different personalities or if they should stay closer to their own. The argument was that character personalities tend to "drift" over time to be more and more similar to the players personality, which eventually wins out.
Not sure if I agree, though it was interesting and a tad unusual see someone arguing that people should stay IN their comfort zone.

Playing yourself inevitably leads to Mary-Sue . . . not be confused with playing with yourself . . . Aaron

But once again we have taken the OPs ilina and just left it lonely by the side of the road.... I get bored playing the same character but it is inevitable that at times ALL our characters will drift towards our IRL personalities. This is where mechanics like advantage/disadvantage, obligation/duty (Star Wars), quirks, etc...really are powerful tools. Do you see the repetitive characters as detracting from everyone's fun ? I really try to encourage my players to push their boundaries and play radically different characters. It keeps the games unique and interesting. I always aim for the Gary Oldman school of role playing vs the Vin Diesel one.

It's one of the reasons I like Vampire (either flavor) - it's built into the setting that you're something expressly other than human. You might build a character that's in line with your 'standard' but unless you do some fairly deviant stuff you're not going to last.

I always play a popular character with a lot of friends. Then I look up to the other side of the table and ask my two cats who wants to be gm tonight. :'-(

We always bring elements of ourselves into our characters, or perhaps more accurately how we would like to see ourselves, when we design them, but when we play them we bring elements of how we actually are.
Just food for thought.
