There are... many, many dead systems out there, systems that are no longer in print and have no available retro-clones. Some of them are missed.
One of the systems I miss is Tri-Stat dX, a generic version of the BESM rules by Guardians of Order. It allowed for a sliding die type, so that your game could scale from bare-boned normals (using a d4) to cosmic level way-more-than-super heroes. It was a fun game, and it's just gone now.
Another is EGG's Lejendary Adventures. I fully missed the boat on that one and wish that I hadn't. I have PDFs of it, and I'd love to play it, but without a retro-clone to point players at, it would be hard to do so.
What dead systems do you miss?

I miss Torg. Fortunately I have a copy of that (and Shatterzone; a similar WestEnd system for sci-fi).

D6 Star Wars. While there is still fan support for the system, from 1987 on this was *my* Star Wars game...though I hear good things about the new system...

For me, I think it would be Alternity. I've played/run/owned tons, but that's the one I really miss.

Oh Goodness my friend just reminded me the original Gamma World. I want my players to fight the Legion of Gold or encounter a Famine at Fargo again...

I miss the original Aeon (later named Trinity). I liked the faster paced story teller system-esque White Wolf used. The art was great and the story fluff was epic.

I miss Torg. Fortunately I have a copy of that (and Shatterzone; a similar WestEnd system for sci-fi). Torg is still available. A new company picked it up and iirc they are working on a new edition... Though that might just be my own imagination. ^.^ EDIT: Found it. Torg Eternity Announcement

It's hard to decide between Aftermath! by Fantasy Games Unlimited and Middle Earth Role Playing (MERP) by Iron Crown. Both are old and crunchy. A much more recent game that has left us was Etherscope by Goodman Games. This was a standard D20 game under the OGL.

Last I heard EEG Enterprises (run by Gail Gygax) had been negotiating with Mongoose re: Lejendary being reprinted. The hold up is that she remains preoccupied with getting EGG's commemorative plaque upgraded to a full blown statue: which needs some serious capital and planning permission. Aaron

Games never die. At worst, they can become difficult to find.
It only takes one person with a book in order to keep a game alive, and if that person loses the book, then you can still play it from memory. Even better - take what you remember, write it down, and make that the new book.
It's not like the process of binding paper makes the game sacrosanct. If you've read a dozen books, then you could easily write one that's better than most of what's on the market.

Don't be pedantic, you know what I meant. Especially since I specifically said, "systems that are no longer in print and have no available retro-clones".

i would love to see a Streamlined Generic Version of the Systems used in Traveler and Rolemaster, a Retroclone of BESM/Tri Stat, a heavily streamlined and simplified retroclone of the Rifts Setting and hell, i would actually dare a Designer to Examine and actually write a streamlined, censored, less bigoted, less offensive, retroclone of Fatal with a quarter of the page count, stripped down to the important points of the system with Byron Hall's offensive touches removed.

I have many of the source books for this. I held onto them after my brother ditched them along with Aberrant. I should scan them... I know it's not widely known, but I wish that Old School Hack wasn't dead. It needed further development.
