Hey Forums! G.I. Joe here. Recently I downloaded Alan Wake's American Nightmare for XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade), and it re-awoke in me the love for the Alan Wake world. So I decided to run a game in the Alan Wake setting where the characters are college students on vacation in Bright Falls. The only problem with using GURPS is that it does not have the mechanics for creating the Taken. To solve this problem I created an advantage that only Taken can get called "Shield of Darkness" Basically it uses the FP box (as the Taken do not use FP) as the shield. The only way to get rid of the SoD is to shine a light on it. I have quantified the intensity of different lights with lums, but I am taking a lot of the physics-math out of it. The lum rating (LR) will be the number of SoD points that go down per second. The Taken's number of SoD points is dependent on their weight, with weight/2=SoD. this may seem like a lot, but an example of a light source that only does 1 lum of damage to the SoD is a torch (not a British torch, but an actual torch, with fire). In constrast a normal MagLight (or other similar flashlight) is at about 50 lums. I will update later with a table of the different light sources and what their LR is.
What do the forums think of these mechanics? Do they accurately portray what happens in the Alan Wake game? Thanks for your comments forums.

My girlfriend played that game recently. Its mythology and setting is very intriguing. I might give it some try.
To me, it look like the Taken is a template that could apply to any creature or object within your setting. A quick search on the Alan Wake wiki have given me something to work with. I don't know if it's accurate, but it kinda make sense to build the Dark Shroud with GURPS Powers with a special power source (The Dark Presence). From there you can apply this template to nearly anything (i.e. crow, humans, dogs, etc.).
I hope this is useful.
Taken 104 points Attributes: IQ-4 [-80]. Advantages: Dark Shroud* (Damage Resistance 50; Dark Presence -10%) [225]; Teleport (Controlled by the Dark Presnce/Uncontrollable -20%; Dark Presence -10%) [-70]. Disadvantages: Amnesia [-10]; Bad Temper (15) [-20]; Berserk (15) [-30]; Callous [-5]; Cannot Learn [-30]; Fanaticism (Dark Presence) [-15]. Quirks: Recite incomprehensible things from past life [-1].
*Dark Presence -10% This limitation applies to all Taken powers. The source of their abilities is known as the Dark Presence, a ancient malevolent force who was imprisoned in the Dark Place underneath Cauldron Lake. Their powers are limited to this place (-5%). Also, sources of light rapidly neutralize and counter the powers of the Taken (-5%).
For example, if a Taken is exposed to a sufficient source of light (i.e. flashlight), its Dark Shroud dissipates leaving it open to attack. This is where your chart with lums (lumens?) will be useful to determine how fast it dissipate the Dark Shroud.

That mechanic seems better than mine. It seems more effective than mine. I might change the fact that their powers are limited to the Cauldron Lake area because I have a feeling that my PCs are going to do the smart thing and get the hell out of dodge after the first night.
