3 hours until "To the Battle!" And I am pumped. Here are the rules to the event: www.youtube.com/watch?v=byZ6lkFmtmk&feature=player_embedded Notice the "Gary Gygax Rule" 5.4.3. at 33:11 in the video. You can follow the standings at usaknights.org/index.htmlAnd yes, I have read: a participant died from a thrust attack a few years ago. Presumably this was the German who received a sword in the eye or that may have been another injury. The date of the incident was not given in the information I received.

So, just a quick update. It's moving towards 8am and Ihave to get myself on the bus to get to the field. I do not have a head for drinking and after two shots of moonshine from the host Polish knights' tents... I really want to sleep in. But it's noomshine so I have no ill effects except a lack of sleep...
The Americans are, on average, 20 -25 years older than the other fighters. But they have allot of heart and they are not doing as bad as the other teams might have suspected. IF you can call winning 3/4 their 1 vs 1 battles (including breaking the Russian opponent's sword) bad. Two fighters, a Ukrainian and a Polish, went to the hospital - just to give you an idea of what's going on on the field.
I gotta get going. I was going to write more but that will have to wait. Lots of Californians, Texans and some from Illinois. Friendly men and women. What a great experience!

This is a live feed for the final day, to-day, of the event. Starts at 4am New York time. The fighting has been fierce and brutal, as you would expect. I do not expect the jousting today to be as brutal. www.medievalists.net/2012/04/30/battle-of-the-nations-warsaw-poland/Team USA took Poland in the mass 21 vs 21 battle yesterday. At an average age of 45 (compared to the other teams averages <25) and without the luxury of frequent practices as a unit, I have to say they have represented very well. USA is out of the standings today but they lasted 3/4 of the way. They have allot of respect from their younger colleagues.

Just back from the event. TEAM USA won the best debut team from a handful of debut teams his year. It was well earned. Many in the camps were talking about the old guys kicking ass. I am 45 so that was nice to hear even though I was never the ass kicker when I was young - let alone being the out of shape gamer I am today (huff-huff).
And one of the team was awarded the best armour for his kit representing its period. That was really nice and, frankly, could not have happened to a more deserving guy. Way to go Edward!
I have come away with allot of personal stories from the past 4 days as well as information on medieval period fighting. I have a keener appreciation for D&D's foundation for abstract combat rounds, hit points and AC calculation after watching the bouts. Gygax was in the SCA as I recall so I should have been expecting to see some of these rules come alive.
My heartfelt gratitude for these men for letting me share a small taste of their friendship, generosity and vast knowledge. These were the Happy Jacks guys (and dolls) come alive from the podcast for me in Warsaw.

Western martial arts has been growing steadily in for the past 15 years or so; I started doing it three years ago. If anyone wants more info or where they can learn send me a PM.
Edit: If there are any general questions (technique, weapons, armor), I can field them in the thread or start a new one.
