Hi - quick noob question.
Do you use your Arcane Skill or Shooting to shoot people with the Bolt power?
Thanks for the help. :-)

it depends both on the cosmetic trapping and on the arcane background in question
if the bolt comes from a fusion pistol made by a Wierd Scientist or a bow made of energy, you use the shooting skill
if the bolt is a knife or other small projectile made of energy you physically throw, you use the throwing skill
if it is a magical ability you simply aim by pointing (like Magic Missile), an Alchemical Deconstruction of Matter via Transmutation or a Psionic probing of a target's mind to inflict painful Traumatic Feedback, you use the respective Arcane skills.
if the boit is a weapon you physically wield as a melee weapon, you use fighting. like Psylocke's mind katanas, but that is better handled by the Mind Knight edge from the Broken Earth player companion

In that instance where you're using Shooting, what would be the point of the Arcane Skill? If you're just shooting a magical or mechanical weapon with the Shooting or Throwing skills, other than for ammo purposes or special circumstances what would be the point of increasing that Arcane Skill if it is hardly ever used?
Edit: From the core book:
"Super powers work a little differently from most other Arcane Backgrounds—each power is its own skill and has no linked attribute (and thus counts as “lower” than its linked Attribute for purposes of Advancement). A hero with the armor and bolt powers, for example, also has an Armor and a Bolt skill he uses to enable it. It’s more expensive for a character to improve his powers, but he starts with more Power Points than other arcane types so he can use his abilities more often."
but from the Super Powers companion which usually supersedes the core:
"Most Super Powres don't require a skill roll to activate; they're always on. Active powers such as attack, ranged require a Shooting or Throwing roll and grant bonus damage for a raise as normal."
Also...
"Weird Science is the skill an inventor uses when activating most devices, and raises increase the effects of the power as usual. If a device uses a different skill, such as Driving, Fighting, or Shooting, the inventor uses that instead. A ray gun, for example, uses the Shooting skill, while a “vibroknife” (a knife with the smite power) uses Fighting."
So it sounds like it depends on what Arcane Background you take and if you're using the Core or Super Powers companion.

depends on the trapping and description as well.
