Link for the lazyI'll actually get a chance to play in SPF's Rifts game at ChupacabraCon so if you have any questions, pointers, or curiosities about the current state of the product let me know and I will do my best report after I return from ChupacabraCon next month. Also, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw I could register for the game. Not only is this my first con but it's the first one I'm running games at and my first registered game is the Rifts game. So excited I can't feel my right arm...and my face is kinda droopy on one side...

I bought in. I've always loved the Fluff of RIFTS. It's the clunky mechanics I didn't enjoy as I got older. I swear we must have ignored 80% of the rules as kids.

I'm in for the GM books as well and the limited edition books.
PDFs should be out within a month or so if all goes according to plan. Can't wait to juice up and punch a guy in the face.

Can somebody explain to me why the hosts always berates and jokes about Rifts? I never played it, and it sounds fun from what I heard about it.

One thing that I think the hosts have berated is the different types of damage (normal and mega) while loving heroes damage types (lethal and non-lethal). I think the idea is interesting, look at superman and the "world of cardboard" example: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WorldOfCardboardSpeech

Can somebody explain to me why the hosts always berates and jokes about Rifts? I never played it, and it sounds fun from what I heard about it. Well, RIFTS was an introduction to role playing for a good portion of the B team. We have a lot of memories and strange game experiences in connection to RIFTs. It serves as a backdrop for years of friendship and gaming from highschool on to present day. My first RPG game ever was spent fighting gargoyles in a hover tank and suffering nary a scratch only to get one hit punched the fuck out by a burster and getting trampled in a bar. Hooked on RPGs for life. The madness that we were able to create was exactly what our high school aged brain meats craved during an all night gaming session. Chainsaw wielding psionic juicers in a biker gang? Sure that is legit. A hover Mystery machine (Scooby Do) being sucked through a portal and a highlander having to face Thor in a gladiatorial arena? Sure why not? Absolutely mismatched party make up? At one point we had a kender and an elf in the same group as a power armor pilot and a damn dragon.I know that, for my part anyway, any joking about it is said with affection. That being said....RIFTS was unbalanced as fuck. cadave and hoseirrob ran it at a con using the old rules and they came to the realization of how clunky the rules were. The fluff kept us in but the crunch was all over the place. I am excited to be able to revisit it under Savage Worlds.

I started with Palladium Games back with their first edition Fantasy game. Had the entire line, Robotech, TMNT, HU, N&S, Rifts, ...
Loved it so much I wrote a web app years ago to dynamically handle the character sheets, bonuses, armor degradation, ect.... ( still ran to slow so switched to Savage Worlds ).
So this...this is exactly what I wanted! Time to dust off that cyber-knight!

That is awesome! We were running PF 2e back when I wrote the web app...then we savaged those characters and played them for another year or so. It was my first taste of running a game in SW and I was sold. I loved the Fluff from Palladium, add in the awesome set of rules for SW and boom I'm set

Mark Twain once wrote "The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane." With that said, Happy Jack's is the best RPG podcast, and according to the best RPG podcast, those us that enjoy playing RIFTS are playing the game wrong. RIFTS is not intended to be balanced. Before playing RIFTS, 90% of my RPG experience was D&D. The other 10% was Star Frontiers and Call of Chtulhu. Theses are all balanced games, and they are all fun. The first time I read the RIFTS rules and tried to create a character, I thought I was getting it wrong. A Glitterboy starts the game with a massive armored suite and a cannon that can blow apart Godzilla while a Rogue Scholar starts with a pencil or something like that. In D&D a first level spell caster can cast a little magic missile. In RIFTS a first level spell caster can call a meteor shower. The more I cam to understand the game the more I liked it. I play RPGs to find a safe alternative to the rules and balance of everyday life. I like Star Wars over Annie Hall, but the Academy of Motion Pictures says I am wrong. I like Yes over Bob Dylan, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says I am wrong. Balance or the lack of balance in RIFTS campaigns may be stay more stable over longer campaigns compared to other systems. A first level Glitterboy and a 9th level Glitterboy are both very much Glitterboys. A first level Rogue Scholar and a 9th level Rogue Scholar are still scholars. The same holds true for casters like the Ley Line Walker. All the characters are standouts according to their class. The levels just compares them within their class. Other systems look to keep balance between classes at each level. In D&D a 9th level wizard may kick the butte of a first level fighter in hand to hand combat. To me the flaw in RIFTS and the Palladium system is not the imbalance. It is the number of holes in rules, such as direct game mechanics linking attributes to skills. Over time one learns to fill these holes with house rules. That is not much of a knock, because every GM I know house rules the system he loves. Original Savage Worlds is based on balance, and its rules are great for pulp action like Indiana Jones or swashbuckling pirates. Savage Worlds tries to provide a simple rule set without holes. I cannot wait to see the blend of these two very different systems. By the way, the creators of Savage RIFTS had the lead role or were part of design team of other acclaimed games: - Savage Worlds Shaintar by Sean Patrick Fannon
- Rogue Trader by Ross Watson
- the Fantasy Flight Star Wars development team included both Sean and Ross plus Savage Worlds creator Shane Hensley
The Savage RIFTS design team naturally includes Shane Hensley and original RIFTS creator Kevin Siembieda. It also included the creator of the Legend of the 5 Rings and 7th Sea RPGs, John Wick. For a preview of the game follow this link. Interview with Sean Patrick Fannon the Savage Rifts creator
