I'm using it as a base for my Outlaw Star Savage World's game. I have found it pretty good in addressing some Sci fi basics (cybertnetics, aliens, etc) that Savage World's needed. The Last Parsec is also a great setting with a lot of decent meat to run players through. It is definitely more suited for pulp (as all Savage Worlds is) or space opera. Think lots of Aliens and fantastic technology less scrounging for resources and hauling cargo....More Star Wars or Star Trek vs Battlestar Galactica or Firefly. My group is more fast and loose with rules so I had to house rule a few things where the companion did not meet our needs. I felt that the space ship combat had some holes in it, but that could just be due to my particular GM style. Overall a fun companion with a lot of options. I'd recommend it if you want a more high epic sci fi game but, if you are drawn to the grittier elements of sci fi, i'd stick with Traveller. YOUR RUNNING A GAME!? Shoot me the deets if you need players

Thank you for the input. I believe I will be making subtle hints for Father's Day.

I think I heard the spaceship and spaceship combat was a bit wonky, but since I have yet to hear any game do that right I think it's quite ok.

Space Walking Walkers who Walk on Space Stations (or "Swiss" for short)! Always the Swiss... I hear they don't like to get involved. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of the Sci-Fi Companion. It overcomplicates things and makes them less FFF IMHO. You could just as easily pull this off with the core rules. Take the Mecha from the Bestiary and make it a vehicle and let the players add a special ability (Weird Science Power like Bolt, Flight, Armor with 20 PP with 'recharge'). The Wizards are, well obviously, NPCs with the Arcane Background (Magic). Just sayin'

I typically run spaceship combat using the Mass Combat rules. Give the players who want to get involved a starfighter (trapped plane from the SWD vehicle section) and run with it.

Good suggestion Jerrod! I had not thought you could use Mass Combat for that.
I think I need to read those spaceship combat rules to see how they work, I haven't actually done it yet. I have read multiple rules for Traveller and they are always wonky somewhere.

After Jerrod mentioned that I went back and looked at the Mass Combat rules and they're actually pretty great. I will probably be running them in the future for a plethora of things. I was actually thinking the Mass Combat rules might work as a basis for running Savage Voltron once the robot has been formed.

The space combat rules are basically the dogfight rules. I'd suggest running a few trial runs and experimenting with it before you run it. The mass combat rules work great, particularly for large combats, but for an up close and personal ship to ship fight the dogfight rules actually work really well.
Cheers,

I still find Savage Worlds FFF even with the science fiction rules though I will have to play it out to see how it goes
Then again I like my Savage Worlds a little bit crunchy...
I see this as a cue to run Stars Are Right Wars (mmm...undead wookies) transplanted from D6.
