I have to admit that LARPs are probably some of the most immersive role playing I have ever done.
It's not just the oh shit monsters and your heart starts racing moments either but the moments where you just react without planning it.

LARPs have never done much for me. That said, more power to those that enjoy it. If you get something out of it then I think that’s great.
I really enjoyed the descriptions given in the podcasts and how much time and passion obviously go into what they do. I totally respect that level of commitment to enjoying your hobby.
I’ve run some “how to host a murder” style RPGs with players that was fun, but you weren’t playing dress-up (though some players did) and there was no physical combat. It was more for the interaction and such. It was fun, but not sure that it really made a huge difference in the overall RP experience.
Admittedly most of my other exposure is VtM back in the 90s so do with that what you will… just too much mopey people wearing black and talking about how bad ass and cool they were…
I like watching the SCA fights at my local RenFair though. I briefly entertained the idea of learning to fence, but the personalities of the group were just too much for me. Maybe had they been more like the folks in the podcast I would have felt welcomed and not like I was going to get hazed into a frat.

The one and only time I LARPd it was kind of a second date with this girl I was interested in. The GM was running a Sabat Vampire LARP and was doing an exposition session where he would sideboard with every character for a while because the Inquisition had come into town and was testing their loyalty. They cast me as a kind of Justicar there to protect the Inquisitor while he did his thing. So there I was standing guard over all the rest of the party while the primary GM took the the second character back to talk with them for a painfully long time. The party's Tzimitze was making flesh golems out of cheerleaders in the basement and saw his opportunity to not only break in the "new guy" but also get some sweet low generation blood into his monster and decided to try to rearrange my face with his powers.
The Co-GM had us do the paper rock scissors method to resist but my character's resistance was also greatly higher than player knew so I won outright, grabbed the hand he attempted to use to rearrange my face, and snapped it backwards (in game, not real life) since I had been given the right to terminate anyone who displayed "heresy".
About twenty minutes later the primary GM returns with the player he had been side boarding with saying "okay, who's next?" only to be informed the rest of the party was ripped apart by the Inquisitor's guard when they tried to attack him or as was described "A room full of body parts with various holes and exploded heads".
I did not get a third date and I think killing her whole LARP party had something to do with it.

Well I hope folks liked the LARP tangent - I was a little wary because I knew that if got up to talk about the table I ran that I would have to explain the set up a bit regarding running a table top for a LARP game, and that would likely send the discussion away from convention games etc.But the turn out was very low for this con's podcast and I didn't really have a choice. once I snuck into the audience, both Kurt and Kimi we on me with "Did you run something? you Did! come talk about it!!!" (all done soto voice so it wasn't recorded)
Seriously, you try saying no to Kimi. Go ahead, I dare you

But seriously… Sadly my and your stories are all too common and I think that is the fault of the folks not the game. The way Myddrin (Edward) described his group sounded really great. I feel like whether I enjoyed it enough to come back I would have been welcomed if nothing else and not made to feel like I had to prove myself or suffer hazing to be accepted. My personal experience is that a lot of LARP (and honestly tabletop RPGs are like this too) is a power fantasy indulgence… and when a new player shows up it is the opportunity for those there for the power fantasy exert their imaginary power. I may be jaded…

Even though I’m not a LARPer I appreciate anyone who has such passion for their hobby and goes out of their way to make it a welcoming and fun environment. You sir, are a hero. Re: "saying no to Kimi…" I'm married/trained and know my place.

I have never been hazed or tested at a LARP I have been at as the new guy. Oddly I only ever played in one Vampire LARP where I played an insane Vampire who thought he was a Jedi Knight. (I know way more about Star Wars than Vampire...) It is sad that people go through that with certain groups when there are groups out there that would welcome you with open arms. Ed, your math light system you play with sounds exactly like my favorite LARP in PA. www.xanodria.com

Ed, your math light system you play with sounds exactly like my favorite LARP in PA. www.xanodria.comI went to your link - unfortunately the website appears to not be finished yet so I couldn't compare systems. From the feel of it I think Dying Kingdoms (DK for short) might have more math than Xanodria. But compared to some of the other Southern California LARPS we are on the math light side. I realized that I should post links since there aren't show notes here if anyone wants to read more: DK is a Southern California/LA area based LARP - yes it is unfair that So Cal has so much gaming available, not just Table Tops but a number of LARP choices too. DK website: larp.dyingkingdoms.com/DK facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/dyingkingdoms/DK on Meetup (this is where our main schedule is): www.meetup.com/DyingKingdomsLARP/I also feel I should point out: I am part of the plot team that currently runs this game, but I am not the original GM and game writer/designer. That honor belongs to Jesse Heinig. I am merely one of the folks helping to continue the legacy he created. That being said, I am a Happy Jacks fan and am willing to chat about LARPing here with folks

I may be jaded… Sorry you had a bad experience. You are pretty correct that the fault lies more with the people than the game itself. I have only recently tried playing a WoD Vampire LARP (that same Pillars of Salt game Kurt brought up) but I have heard stories from both ends of the spectrum of great experiences and absolute douche-baggery regarding Cam club and OWbN (2 national/global Vamp larp organizations) One thing mechanically that does help us out in DK is we have a retirement cap. That when your character reaches a certain amount of CP (our version of XP) it is time for them to retire and leave the game, and you make a new character back at starting (or near starting) CP level. This discourages the kind of player who seeks the power fantasy indulgence. Yes there will come a time that you will be a bad ass hero etc, but then that hero will go off to do other things, and those younger PC's will then be the bad asses that your new character will look up too. This seems very much to attract folks who are less about being the toughest cookie and more about the story and their character's journey.

First: Kimi, great job hosting the podcast.
Second : Never LARPed, but it was interesting to hear about.
Third: I would love to play with you, Kimi, but I'm on the wrong side of the country. Thanks for the invite!
(I wouldn't offer to clean your shoes, either. I don't even like to clean my shoes.)

Wow. You guys have clearly been unfortunate enough to get stuck in the wrong kind of Power Fantasy games.
I had a GM that specialized in those, and they were a blast. We had no need to flex our muscles at the newbies. That was what the monsters and villains were there for.

Oh, and for what it's worth? Tunnels and Trolls reads like it'll be a super fun game. But in actual play it drags a lot. I would not count myself as a T&T fan/advocate.

Did you actually interact with them at all, or just judge them from afar? You can't put words in someone's mouth or assume they will be unfriendly. It's easy to claim the problem is "those people" and not yourself for being to timid to get involved. Even if those guys were jerks, why should that stop you from getting into SCA or fencing? If you want it, get after it.
