My conclusion after running it for several years is that Numenera and the Cypher System are excellent games on their own terms, even without their designer/author's name on its cover. They run very quickly and smooth. The GM prep phase of this game is REALLY quick and one can really prep a game while waiting at the dentist's office, every terms the GM use in the game being distilled down to ONE frikking number. These games brought many nights of fun to my group and I would recommend it. Good to hear some praise. I couldn't really respond in general with background in running it. I only played once, and had a great time. The system was easy to groc. I have the PDF and have been reading it with the intention of running, and I very much liked what I see. I think the biggest barrier (if you aren't worried about the system mechanics) is the setting sci-fi fantasy feel, but for one of my games I planned it was supposed to go in that direction, so I was hoping this one would work.

I did fight with my own understanding of the science-fantasy genre and that idea that weirdness is all around in the Ninth World. I settle on the idea that if you want anything to feel weird is to have some normal stuff in contrast. So I started the adventure with pretty normal stuff, a medieval loggers town for example, and then I started to add little weirdnest here and there. Not everything has to be science, science, more science, nanites, all the frikking time. Sometimes it's best to don't explain something even as a GM, to keep that fantasy and magic feel to things. It's been challenging but very rewarding.

Also, because this deserves to not get lost in the previous post... Congrats Jimto! And I am going to presume that the BACA you mention is Bikers Against Child Abuse. You guys rock. I want to thank you for the great work you all do. Thanks! Yes, that is the BACA I meant. Your comments and thanks are much appreciated.

Just listened to this episode, and thought I'd lay out my experiences with having kids and how that affected my gaming. It affected it in a big way. I actually made a couple of attempts to get back into it and I think only now can I actually game weekly, albeit with only a couple of timeslot options. Right before the baby came I started my GURPS Steampunk campaign that a few people here were in on. It went well for a couple of sessions, but it quickly became very difficult. (Ok, that and daylight savings changes fucking everyone). Then toward the end of last year I started a Shadowrun campaign which also lasted only a few sessions. Another false start. And more daylight savings issues.... I think I've figured this out now - don't start a fucking campaign with people in another hemisphere a month before daylight savings without addressing ut up front..... The demon spawn is nearly three years old now, and my gaming happens in the timeslot starting about 30 - 60 minutes before they go to bed (during "quiet time"). And continues for 3 - 4 hours. This can be pretty well any day of the week, but it has to be that timeslot. It helps that I game online so I have no travel time. I hope that helps give some perspective. I found it very, very difficult to play campaigns before the point where you can tuck them into bed and say nite nite, about 2-3 years old. It isn't like I didn't game at all - it was just in short bursts of a few weeks at a time, once or twice a year

I thought you were all smart enough not to follow our example with daylight savings.

I thought you were all smart enough not to follow our example with daylight savings. It's fucked. Daylight savings starts for me this weekend. Then it finishes for you guys a few weeks later. It's a 2 hour swing. THis time I've just moved WITH my own daylight savings (so the session time technically does not change) and everyone else can deal with their own local time changes....
