Hello folks. Someone has started a new meetup in the East LA area called Story Games Glendale: www.meetup.com/Story-Games-Glendale. (Glendale is near Burbank, Pasadena, and downtown Los Angeles). We haven't had our first meetup yet, but the seed for the group consists of his gamer group from work, and a gamer group I've started a few months back for story games. Modeled after Story Games Seattle (see their FAQ for some idea of what that is), we may deal primarily with structured GM-less games like Microscope and The Quiet Year, where everyone has a pretty equal say in the narrative. This style is very new-gamer friendly, and can be a great experience for veteran gamers that haven't experienced this model, but also leans far from GM-based games. Some folks don't enjoy it, but only one way to find out. We'll see how that goes moving forward (personally, I like to have a variety of games where many are not GM-less). Anyways, if people are in the area and interested, come check it out.

cadave Here it is... the meetup in case folks are interested at some point for more consistent (or drop in) gaming over in the Glendale area of LA. Next meetup is tomorrow (which I will be missing due to con) but otherwise it's every other week (events listed on meetup). All gaming is like Games on Demand; one shots, no need to know rules or bring anything, etc.

Maybe not a "GURPS kinda place," but always happy to see local gamers colliding together!

mook, for the time being I think the focus will be on low-prep, often GM-less story games that players can complete in the course of an evening, at least until a group of regular attendees emerges. David, who formed the group on Meetup, said he'd be open to running campaigns once there's a group of regular players. He also said he would probably start posting suggestions for games on the group site for people to vote on. This Tuesday we played a lengthy but satisfying game of the Fall of Magic. It's a GM-less story game with rotating narratorial responsibilities, played using a map on a scroll that you unroll as the story progresses, and each area on the map has a narrative prompt (e.g. "The last time you saw true magic," "your face reflected in the water," "the hospitality of the Barley Lord"). We had a tough small guy titled "the Giant of Mistwood," a ranger looking to atone for summoning a demon that slew her rival, a swineherd tasked with delivering 121 pigs possessed by the souls of slain warriors to the warriors' former general, and a magus's apprentice toting her gnome-sized master on her back like a papoose.

As always, I had a great time. Love seeing what everyone brings to these games, as it's always a different grab bag and really dug that Wakefield came out. (hoping for more of that action!) I think in the future we're going to try and post the games we'd like to run ahead of time, just to get the conversation going on the Meetup page, prior to the actual meet. Also, maybe that'll get folks either: 1. excited to come cause it's a game they've wanted to try, or 2. participating in the conversation and getting hyped up that way. The meetup is still early days, so we're hoping for more participation as time goes on, but the main thing is that Dave and I are happy to do it and are consistently going, so hoping that eventually we get over the hump of low numbers.

Man, this sounds great! If I'm ever in LA, I'll check the store out... hopefully on a Tuesday to meet more of you douchebags.

This week at Glendale Story Games, tomes, David and I had a blast playing John Harper's Danger Patrol. Among some of the highlights were: Nazi robots driven by brains in jars, the Jupiter-based Russian government of the Crimson Republic, disrupted alliance talks at the Ionian Assembly, double agents, calcium-extraction guns, two-fisted flyboys and alien detectives. Hope to see more folks based in or near east Los Angeles coming out to play with us!

I'll be getting the necessities to run a few other games in the future, like FreeMarket and Sabe Jones' Blazing Rose. Dave mentioned Dogs in the Vineyard, too, which I've been itching to play.
