Okay, I'm designing an encounter for a Fantasy AGE convention game and I need some intellectual help.
The idea is fairly straightforward. The PCs are a group of mercenaries who were on a scouting mission in some hills near a forest. During their mission a storm came along and forced them to seek shelter in an old inn in a remote valley. While in the inn they discovered that all of the miners and their families, along with everyone else in the town has been killed or pulled into the mines by 'monsters' who started coming out of the mines a week ago. One of the survivors is the dwarven foremen of the mine who tells the players that they were digging deep into the mine when they crashed through a wall and monsters started pouring out.
The meta-plot is simple. The monsters are part of an undead kingdom that is using giant Burrowers to dig invasion tunnels through the hills, under the forest and into the major trading city for an invasion.
The idea is that the players will go into the mines to both investigate and rescue anyone who is captured during the night time raids on the inn.
I want them to enter the mine and use the elevator to go down, deep into the mines. However, I want this elevator to be a ride from Hades for the players.
Any thoughts on what I should do with the elevator? Just snapping the rope and dropping them seems sophomoric, so I'm turning to the forums here for help.

You could have the elevator held by three chains; as they descend, talk about the squeals and rattles of the rusty chains, the flakes and chunks of oxidized metal sloughing off. *Things* that have burrowed off the main shaft peer out of their holes, only seen by the reflection of torchlight in their eyes as the elevator descends past.
Then you snap a chain.

I think railroading them into a Grimtooth elevator might be a bit much

Well, heh heh. The elevator needs someone at the top to winch it. The dwarf is actually a member of a nearby gang of opportunistic villains, he'll volunteer to stay above ground and operate the lift winch. Getting down will be easy, getting back up may cost far more than the PC's anticipated. As we know hitpoints heal but gold, hard won then lost, that's the true horror as it leaves scars that never heal. Aaron

How about little baby burrowers that have dug into the walls of the elevator shaft? The passing noise of the elevator wakes them up and they start raining on the PCs.

During the ride down, make pieces of the floor fall out and let the players scramble for the room left.
Murder hobos are loaded with weapons, armor, healing potions, gold coins, dragon skeletons and cheese wheels. Who said that the elevator was built for carry that kind of weight?

When they get back to the keep:
