I mean holy shit these people live or die by how well their kids do in football. Win or lose I will bond with my kid by playing Savage Worlds or x-wing the next day.

Some parents take things too far. My daughter plays basketball and we see our share of nutjobs.

Competitive team sports are the worst. My son did one season of football (Australian Rules), and by the end he was hating it. I actually ended up taking him out of football and put him into muay thai kickboxing instead. He's now been in that longer than he did football and he still has heaps of fun. I know that sounds weird - but because they don't fight six year olds against each other, no one can "win" and therefore no one can be a dickhead. Or maybe he just really loves learning how to fight..... time will tell

Sounds like you're dealing with Helicopter Parents....
Do they use the pronoun "we" when they refer to their kid? That's a sure sign right there.

Football should only have 2 codes: Union and League. And one of those codes doesn't exist when Australia isn't winning I considered putting him in League instead, but my boys knuckles aren't quite close enough to the ground for that

I've always thought fighting for sport is a fools errand. While learning to fight can be fun, the goal should never be competition. Most 'combat' sports are injurious to the fighters or degrade the purpose of learning to fight by changing the 'sport' to make it competition friendly.
Mui Thai is wicked cool, but you might want to reconsider how cool you are with having your son kicked in the head repeatedly. There is a pretty good reason for the stereotype of fighters being stupid. Your ability to one day be an Einstein is proportionally inverse to how often you get hit in the head.

having your son kicked in the head repeatedly. HA! gr8 b8 m8. @20 seconds he loses brain cells that aren't coming back. One need only look at Mike Tyson to see what a life time of getting hit in the head can do to you. This is a pretty big concern with football as well. Maybe the parents are this way because they got to play back when helmets were worse than they are now, ey?
