This is Doug. As relates to the a.k.a. versus i.e. in my email:
I think we might technically be both wrong. What I offered was not the only possibility of how a secret could be activated. It was an example of one.
Therefore, I officially retcon by a.k.a. with an e.g.

I haven't finished listening to the episode yet, but I had to comment about something. Around 54:58 tyler claims that the deckbuilding game Dominion is the best game ever, and Bill chimes in with "such a good game". Now far be it from me to disagree with tyler and get another episode's worth of sass in return, but... Dominion? The best game ever? Meh. It's OK, but it can really suffer from the 'four people playing solitaire at the same table' problem that some deckbuilding games have. If you like deckbuilding games, I strongly recommend you try out Eminent Domain. It's a sci-fi flavored, empire building game. You get all these cool little spaceships along with the cards, which look awesome. The game's similar to Dominion, but unlike that game, you actually get to do things on other player's turns in Eminent Domain. So it doesn't feel so solitaire-esque. In response to the guy who wrote in about wanting to give scene descriptions to his players without boring them to tears (sorry, I forget his name) I have a suggestion. I'm currently running a game of Apocalypse World with my group, and the author of that game, Vincent Baker, says that the GM should put a lot of that responsibility back into the player's hands. So the PCs walk into an area or interact with an NPC that you haven't detailed, instead of scrambling for a description of that thing, the GM can ask the players what their characters see, hear, smell, etc. Why not? I mean, it's hard work to come up with descriptions for random elements completely on the fly, not to mention doing it while keeping track of all your NPCs and the story as well. It's just another form of "Yes and" that the GM can do. One of the principles that GMs should follow when running Apocalypse World is to "Ask provocative questions and build on the answers", which I really like. Say your players head off to the local tavern instead of starting off on their epic quest like you expected them to. They step inside and one of them asks what the place looks like. Instead of wracking your brain, turn the question over to another player. "Good question, Jerome. Tom, your character's been to this town before, what does this tavern look like?" Use whatever answer the player gives you, and then spring board off of it. I'm trying to do that with my players now, and it does take some getting used to. Most of the time the player I ask goes "Uhn, I dunno" at first, because they don't want to countermand anything the GM (me) already has planned. Here's the thing though. I don't have anything planned because a) the PCs went somewhere I wasn't expecting them to go and b) I'm making this shit up as I go along anyway. You can't "ruin" something that's not there. Plus, it's been said before, but often times the players will come up with stuff that is way more interesting than the GM can. Edit: Whoops. Just got to the part where GandalfthePlaid mentions the exact same thing in the chatroom. Good call Gandalf. ;D

Another deckbuilding game to try (that I really liked) is called Arcana. You're one of 8 guild masters who's basically trying to control all the business in your territory of a fictional city. You can do a lot of stuff to accomplish that, and it's awesome.

Concerning Mutants & Masterminds, it is as much as flexible as HERO and GURPS. Any game with means of doing characters like Darkseid, Superman and Wonder Woman under 15 minutes is. Those character are a nightmare to build in GURPS and HERO. M&M does not rely on the archetypes/classes. Games like Silver Age Sentinels d20 do have classes for superheroes, but M&M is like GURPS. You have points and build what you want. Archetypes in M&M are like templates in GURPS 4th edition, shortcuts to create character easily, not mandatory. Stu, maybe you could give M&M another read.

They mentioned Fray running some fantastic sounding game where character creation is mostly just those 4 questions. Anybody know if that's available on Drivethru?

I throw around the phrase "Best (insert thing I am currently enjoying) ever." a lot. Usually, it falls to the LAST thing I enjoyed. If had had played Catan mroe recently, I'd say "Catan is the best game ever." I have problems viewing things objectively and placing them on any sort of scale. I should get help.

You should try Lords of Vegas though... that game rules my world right now.
