How bad does someone have to be to bring Tyler out of hiding? There are those who know how to rouse me from my slumber. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Pretty much. If you aren't willing to defend your ideas and listen to others, you are just a squawking parrot. The only way to challenge bad ideas is with debate. While I would love to debate you all in the smooth manner of Richard Dawkins, I'm afraid I'm just not that saintly. Like anything in this day and age, RPG and gamer culture is full of bad ideas and idiots who think they should be able to parrot those ideas without any pushback. In my experience gamers are receptive, open-minded, and excited about new ideas--even bad ones. Bad ideas help us learn. And it's possible (likely) that my good idea is someone else's bad idea. I don't see much point in arguing about it. It's not like we're trying to solve global problems or cure diseases. And yet people are still trying to run everything under the sun in some version of D&D. You'd think that most people would have figured out that is a bad idea by now, but yet it continues to be suggested! I'm reminded of a situation with my own ignorance. As a kid my dad would take us fishing and we used a lot of powerbait. There were certain colors that worked better than others, so feeling like I knew my ass from the hole in the ground I could proudly recommend rainbow powerbait with sparkles for all your fishing needs! Meanwhile my Dad (the real fisherman) is flat up embarrassed by my lack of fishing knowledge. D&D works (not well, but it does). Someone had fun (caught fish) with it. So they then go out and sell sell sell! And they sound like experts... Most people don't know better. But somehow it is rude to point it out (even politely, which is why I really stopped trying to be polite). It's like most people would rather be ignorant than be corrected. I'm out of patience for those people.

I'm out of patience for those people. It's not the people don't like being corrected (though, I'll concede that no one likes being told they're wrong) it's that they don't like being insulted when they get corrected. It seems like the issue people are taking with you now isn't that you have a different opinion, it's that you feel the need to be rude and insulting to them when you disagree with them. Like I said in the other thread, it's possible to disagree with someone and offer your own opinion, or even offer evidence as to why their opinion is wrong, without being such a jerk about it.

I'm out of patience for those people. Is that the big issue you are fired up about? I haven't met many of those people, but I don't doubt they are out there. And I have no problem with them shoving everything into D&D if that's what they want. It's their game. I shove lots of things into things I'm not supposed to. Not like that. Get your mind out of the gutter. I was talking about Pringles on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The larger point is these are things really not worth getting riled up about. I suppose if it does get you riled up, then deploy some tact so you don't piss people off. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Calling a kobold stinky will get a dragon in your village."
Nah, there are lots of people who are better than me. Also a lot of people who are worse than me. Also, respect is earned, not given freely.
Most of you know that I'm not a frequent forum reader, but here is a prime example of why we are different people. Respect is something we should all have for each other. We're all here for the same reasons, namely we all like games (of all the various types). Now I agree that people can earn respect, but if we start from a place of totalitarian venom for all people that haven't proven themselves that doesn't lead to useful discussion either. So I'm going to toss in my coins to the "maybe you should chill out" pile. Also, as I said I don't forum regularly enough to know everyone's backstories, but if you manage to anger mook you're doing it wrong. Never have I dealt with a person as affable and tolerant as he is, either in or out of our shared hobby.

I lurk. I try not to feed the troll. But I used to love reading and posting here, and now? One or two users have made it completely toxic, and a lot of the people I enjoyed reading have all but abandoned it. Even skipping over posts by specific users does no good, because it seems like everyone else is responding to them and the entire tone of the community has changed. Guess I'm just a grumpy old man... but it really pisses me off. Sorry to be the piss in the Cheerios this morning. Back to lurking and quietly bemoaning. Just in case, if I had anything to do with that, I apologize. I know that I can be abrasive (though I prefer passionate) and there's a few hot buttons that can instantly flip me from kindly, jovial asshole to raging, vengeful asshole. So if one of those episodes has caused undue distress, I apologize.

As Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Calling a kobold stinky will get a dragon in your village." Teddy Roosevelt played the best Bard I've ever see someone play. Nuggets of wisdom like that would definitely psych me up to give me +1 on all rolls.

Just to address the whole, to paraphrase, 'people trying to do everything in DnD are fuckwits'. WhiteStar seems to be doing well enough for the S&W crowd, I sure the new StarFinder will garner a substantial following . . . and you know why?, because the people playing those games find them (*shock*gasp*) FUN. If they didn't they would keep playing them, are they all idiots for simply having fun?. Call me strange but I'd rather play a game for shits and giggles that are fun to play than rack my balls on some self imposed crucifix of 'superior system mastery' (for want of a better phrase). Except when at my local FATAL LARP - 'cause then the gonad crucifix is the absolute must have accessory . . . Aaron

the people playing those games find them (*shock*gasp*) FUN. That's what it all comes down to. If you and your group are having fun with whatever it is you're doing in your games, then that's all that matters. Assuming it doesn't fall south of legalities, that is. But when it comes to RPGs, there really isn't any "bad wrong fun". If you're running Monsterhearts with Savage Worlds and your group is enjoying it? Get down with your bad self.
