Catching up on this season of The Flash and Supernatural on Netflix. Mainly out of completionism rather than entertainment. Alas.

I watched The Magnificent Seven remake by Antoine Fuqua, which I was honestly prepared to hate. It was a 99¢ rental on iTunes, and had a 63% Rotten Tomatoes rating, giving it a "barely fresh" or nearly-rotten estimation.
Instead, there are some fantastic character bits in it, with some snappy dialog which I assume is partly from Nic Pizzolato's contribution to the script. No joke, this is also the first time I have ever enjoyed Ethan Hawke in ANYTHING.
It's a good ride, with a bit of an overlong final battle, and a couple of unforgivable tactical idiocy moves, involving a sharpshooter and/or a gatling gun. But, hey, it was a fun ride.

The Girl with All the Gifts — This film had me enrapt from start to finish. This is a sterling, fresh and fascinating take on the zombie genre. If anything, this is an altered perspective on the statement made in the novelette, I Am Legend. I was never sure which way the story would go, and in the end I was fascinated with the varied and complex emotions it instilled in me. There are a couple of odd continuity problems in the story, but nothing ruinous. The girl who played the lead is going to be huge.
Swiss Army Man — The Daniels, as they credit their shared writers/directors effort, do a passable Michel Gondry imitation, including sweded films, makeshift scenery, and the volume of fully three films' worth of twee intimacy. Along the way they leap gleefully past every limitation of good taste to indulge in fart, shit, vomit, and boner jokes, as Hank (living but emotionally dead) and Manny (dead but emotionally alive) collaborate to rescue each other from their predicament, finding the meaning of love or at least true compassion along the way. It's never clear if we're actually dealing with a man who was stranded on a deserted island, or if it's simply a figurative one. The ending is fantastic, but does nothing to clarify the so-called reality of the film's preceding scenes.

Preacher: Season 2 episode 1 The pieces are in place and now Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy are on a proper road trip that feels like it comes from the comics. With the Saint of Killers on their tail (I might get tired of him very quickly). Otherwise Episode 1 bodes very well. Watch the first fifteen minutes at least, even if you didn't think much of season 1.

I still haven't had a chance to sit down and watch the flick.

Yeah, I intentionally watched the movie first.
So many times I have read a book, only to watch its movie afterward and be insanely disappointed. F. Paul Wilson's "the keep" is no literary masterpiece, but the movie adaptation is straight garbage.
I intend to read TGWATG soon.

The Children of men, I forced my 15 years old to watch the movie and he did like it too.
He wanted to watch Pirates of the Caribbean but some movies needs to be seen.
Next on the list is Akira Kurosawa's Ran :-)

Next on the list is Akira Kurosawa's Ran :-) I got your back on Children of Men. PotC, the first movie is pretty great. The second one is passable. The rest, it's hard to believe how much money and talent can be wasted on garbage. Stay your hand, EricaOdd ! I'm a huge fan of Black Sails and even bought the season pass for Crossbones! (But PotC 3- onward are garbage!) And this is where uncommonman and I will disagree: Ran is amazingly self-indulgent. I think you're gonna have trust issues with the 15-year-old if you tell him it's awesome.

Preacher: Season 2 episode 1 With the Saint of Killers on their tail (I might get tired of him very quickly). He was a major part of the comic series so probably not good to get tired of him too quickly, though so far he's a little less interesting than what I remember.

Yeah, I remember him being a very cool part of the comic book. But I may be bored of him already on TV. (Having just seen episode 2)

Yeah, I remember him being a very cool part of the comic book. But I may be bored of him already on TV. (Having just seen episode 2) I think the fact that they skipped over half the mythology surrounding him (the more interesting half) is probably hurting a lot. Also, he was able to be affected by the Voice in the comics from what I remember, but he found clever ways around it. Sort of feels like they're hand waving it, rather than writing a more interesting conflict between the two.

GLOW is real fun
I also just jumped on board the Rick and Morty train. Hated the show at first, actually. It was the end of Potion #9 that won me over!
