This isn't a favorite character story, so much as a story from my favorite game of Samurai World (pbta L5R)
The Premise: Lord Doji Hishegawa, possessor of the Jade Lotus (a cup that can purify any liquid), has just passed away, and the 6 PC's all arrive at his estate to try and gain control of the Jade Lotus.
Samurai World requires each player to choose another as a Secret Love, it's one of the best parts of the game, so here's the cast and confusing relationship map.
Kuni Shuzo (Older brother to Jotaru)
Kuni Jotaru (younger brother of Shuzo)
Kakita Inoue (older sister of Shizue)
Kakita Shizue (younger sister of Inoue)
Matsu Satomi (Aunt by marriage to the Kakita's)
Shosuro Ayame (her master is owed a deby by Doji Hishegawa)
Matsu Satomi loves Kuni Jotaru; Kuni Jotaru loves Kakita Inoue; Kakita Inoue loves Kuni Shuzo; Kuni Shuzo loves Kakita Shizue; Kakita Shizue loves Shosuro Ayame; Shosuro Ayame loves Kakita Shizue
Thoroughly confused? Good, here's the scene in question.
The player of Kuni Jotaru left the room to go to the bathroom, during that time, his older brother, Kuni Shuzo & Matsu Satomi were sharing sake, and discussing alliances, and marriages. Kuni Shuzo begins to believe that Matsu Satomi is in love with him, and trying to arrange a marriage between the pair, when suddenly she suggest that she marry his younger brother, Kuni Jotaru, instead. Kuni Shuzo quickly agrees, and they make a pact to have the pair wed.
Later the player of Kuni Jotaru returns, and there is a scene of both Kuni brothers, Matsu Satomi, and Kakita Inoue. Shuzo welcomes Jotaru into the room, and informs him of the great duty before him, as he is to bring about an alliance with the Lion by marrying Matsu Satomi.
The player, having not been in the room, is suddenly shocked and confused, but doesn't miss a beat as in character he exclaims "What? No! I don't love her! I love her!" pointing to Kakita Inoue. Embarrassing himself, and everyone in the room. He keeps complaining, and fighting with his brother, even trying to summon the kami to attack his own brother in anger, because he keeps rolling a -6 on his love rolls, meanwhile, the Matsu player keeps rolling 10+, so she's able to keep her emotions in check, until she finally lashes out at the raging Jotaru, grabs him by his kimono and slams him against the floor shouting at him to control himself like a proper Samurai, and do your duty!
It was so gosh darn amazing! In the end, Kuni Jotaru and Matsu Satomi did indeed wed, but she no longer loved him, for she saw the spineless and shameful man he actually was, but she refused to go back on her word, so they ended up with a bitter loveless marriage.
Kakita Inoue on the other hand, was able to negotiate a marriage between herself and Kuni Shuzo, Shuzo agreeing, because he believed he would at least be in the same castle as Kakita Shizue.
Kakita Shizue, and Shosuro Ayame, both failed their love rolls bad early on, and ended up revealing their feelings to each other, but the only one to witness this was Kakita Inoue, who suspected her sister, Shizue, of being in love with Kuni Shuzo. After discovering their affair, she arranged for her sister to be stationed in Shosuro Ayame's home court so they could have their affair, and Kuni Shuzo would be unable to see Kakita Shizue.
It was delicious wonderful samurai love and tragedy.
Hope you were able to understand all that in the end!
