I get that Shane didn't need to put this up on kickstarter, but I feel there really should be some advantage to kickstarting something. Maybe it's a few bucks off the price or some small bonus.
$50 might end up being the MSRP for the book, but my FLGS isn't going to sell it for that much.
So I may as well wait and pick it up at my store.
This is a see a common problem on Kickstarter in general, lots of people do this. I like to check out the games people are putting up there and lots of people consider it a pre-order instead of actually getting funding to get the item made.
So I'm not hating on Pinnacle and I think Deadlnads Noir sounds great. There just isn't a reason for me to kickstart it.

Saw this yesterday and it looks amazing. Unfortunately, my budget demands I hold off on this purchase (the V20 kickstarters already took a bite out of my wallet earlier). I'll still check in to hear the rest of the audio drama. Seems like they're really doing a good job capturing the flavor of the genre and new setting. I half expect to hear "This doll had it all, 'cept she wasn't too keen on breathing. Damn. Harrowed dames ... nothin' but trouble, friend."

I see Kickstarter as part pre-order, part philanthropy.
And considering there is NO guarantee you'll get the product being funded, it's a good bit more of the second.
If you look at the Ogre kickstarter, everyone who buys the game will benefit from it's smashing success, as it will be a much more feature-rich package because of all the extra money contributed.
One of the bands we share our stage at the Renaissance Faire with, the Dreadcrew of Oddwood, did a kickstarter for their most recent CD. They raised like 5k, which allowed them to spend more money on production cost than they would have been able to do otherwise. They rented a pro-studio to record the drums and included 36 pages of 4-color liner notes.

But if you are looking for funding for an item you will then sell to make a profit off of, then you could at least have some way to say thanks other than writing a backer's name "on our website". I saw a new RPG kickstarter that seemed interesting. The hardcopy book level was $25 and I asked the creator if there was going to be a PDF version. He said yes just donate at the $25 level and specify you want a pdf instead of the book. Umm...no. If you look at the Ogre kickstarter, everyone who buys the game will benefit from it's smashing success, as it will be a much more feature-rich package because of all the extra money contributed. Steve Jackson did the same thing as the Double Fine Adventure kickstarter which I think is great. They said we want to make the basic version if we fund and if we over fund X amount will be able to make an even better version X of the product. Which I think is much better than "What's behind door #3" approach to surprise stretch goals to squeeze another 5 bucks out of the same 10 fans. I like Kickstarter. Deadlands Noir is a very cool idea. If the Boggards every want to kickstart something I'll be there. Now I will shut up before I derail this any further.

I agree with Stu here. It's not really a pre-order. I'd say the first part of the donation is to make sure the product sees the light of day ( or at least has a good change of seeing the light of day ). The Second part it to make sure it is everything you want it to be. If Peg didn't do the kickstarter, we probably would have seen the book, however maybe it's not a hard back, maybe we don't see the matching deck of cards, or the new bennies, the large color map, ect. And who knows what the stretch goals mean....extra books, a plot point ect. And since you can comment on what you like to see it really helps the developer of the item get a feel of the pulse of the people they are selling too. To me kickstarter has a very mild collaborative feel to it.

You're getting the book, the PDF, and the Dime Novel.

Did Windy Drawers make the NPC list? I noticed the kickstarter is sold out for that slot.
