Just want to thank you guys for reading my email on 20-9 and then talking about it again in 20-10. I was the one with the group that lost attention after beginning a session with a combat. While the next session had already past, I used you advice in my last session. The players explored the BBG past in flashbacks and learned why he is evil and hates them. The plays seemed to really enjoy it.
A quick clarification because some of the host seemed unsure about the situation. My group enjoys role playing but there is 8 of them and cell phones have impaired everyone attention spans. I try to limit combats to one per session and try to be quick about it.

To add balance, allow me to relate a time that a GM totally yes anded one of my moments of sacrifice.
We were playing Rifts. I was a Juicer. We had been playing for a while, and he was coming close to the end of his life. For context, juicers are chemically enhanced humans. While they gain a ton of speed, strength and vitality, they pay for it with an incredibly reduced lifespan. Most juicers don't survive their eighth year under the drugs, and quitting them is to live as a shell of a person. He wanted to go out on his own terms.
We ran across a giant armoured worm that could burrow through dimensions, making it damn hard to fight. Even our biggest weapons couldn't scratch it. I had a missile laden jetpack, so I told my GM that I would arm all the missiles, not fire them, then the next time it appeared, fly straight down it's gullet and red-line the engine until it blew.
My GM just kinda blinked for a second or two, then grinned and described how everyone saw me fly down the things throat and it's consequent blowing into tiny bits.

When I was listening to both times about the combat and losing energy afterwards, I had thought originally the problem was that, due to pacing, the combat came closer to the end of the session, so by then everyone had roleplayed out etc.
I thought the issue was more of 'Do we leave it as a cliffhanger and deal with it next session, or do we muscle through and possibly run over on time?'
I've had sessions end right before the big event and we decide to just move it to next session, or I've had times where we finish that, even if we run long. Either could present problems.

Does your group expect combat to happen every session? My group seems happy with zero combat most of the time. We've had one real fight and one chase sequence in the dozen-plus sessions we've had. No-one seems to be champing at the bit for more fights, though I do have them rolling against their skills as often as possible.
