Because I know there's a truckload of stuff for 1e, how much of it (explicitly rules-wise, I know fluff is portable to anything) is usable with the (apparently) more mechanically refined 2e?
Also, are 1e careers (because I understand the supplements had quite a few) compatible with 2e at all?

Overall you should be able to use 1e products with 2e pretty easily. World stats didn't change. Ship construction had a complete overhaul, but the resulting ships are not that different and I see no reason to change 1e ships to fit 2e unless you really enjoy ship design. There is a change in the way items are categorized and used, just use the 2e equipment rules for the item. Character gen has a few small changes, Stats are the same, Careers are essentially the same, but skills have been "simplified" For example Comms and Computer are now under Electronics, so if you have Electronics, you can at least turn on the ships computer and ships radio. A lot of the old "Books" you don't need, because the most used information was added to the 2e core book. Short answer - use the old stuff, just remember the skill tree is different. I don't know if Forresst has switched to 2nd ed, but she's the Traveller Master here.

Thanks for that. I plan on running a game for some newbies, uni friends of my partner. Traveller doesn't use strange dice, sci-fi should be good for science geeks, and character creation doesn't require them to learn the system up front which is always nice. :-)
I have been reading some diehards who swear by 1e, or even the Cepheus system. Thoughts?

I like Mongoose 1e fine, but I like what Mongoose did with the skill system for 2e. Cepheus system, I have looked at, but not a lot. From what I've seen it is basically Mongoose 1e. Use what you have. The differences are not that big. Just pick one and make sure everyone is using the same system. I think Cepheus is pay what you want for the pdf, so that would be the least expensive option, and I think there are more adventures out for Cepheus than for either ed of Mongoose.

Well Forresst's profile says currently running MgT2e so I gather she switched, or is at least testing the water? =P
I'm trying to decide whether coming up with my own setting would be easier or harder than devouring one of the Traveller 1e setting bibles...

I've played Traveller since first ed little black books. 2nd Ed MGT is, in my opinion, the most perfect distillation of the spirit of Traveller ever. And because the ruleset has hardly changed (a testament to the strength of the original system) you can run pretty much anything from 40 years of Traveller publishing.
It's also piss-easy to create a setting through play, if you start with a human-centric "home" system, and just roll random system generation as your players explore, creating alien races as and when needed.
If I were to recommend a setting though, it would be 2300 which even though it's what, 20 odd years old? It should be easily adapted to MGT2

I've always looked at the various Traveller versions (the original and Mongoose, not the MegaTraveller or the d20 etc) as all backward compatible. Most everything will work with some minor tweaking. And I say minor because It's really simple, none of the changes they made break the game, they are more like additions not revamps. It's not like trying to make a 4E character work in 5E.
Just have to right click on it and run it in compatibility mode.

Avoid Megatraveller, gotcha.
In terms of a setting, I was thinking about taking the basic backstory premise of EVE Online, then using modified versions of the factions from Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri, which gives me 14 factions with clear ideological motives and goals.

Also, has anyone ever put together a list of official careers not in the core book for MgT 1e?

That's an awful lot to digest! =P
Question for the Traveller vets, how do you go about including multi-star system political entities in your games? From what I've read, the random planet generator doesn't really take that into account.

The planet generator creates a framework. The fluff, or how that framework ‘works’ is up to you. ie: you can’t rely on the UPC alone, it needs context. If I understand you correctly then the default traveller universe is exactly what you describe via-a-vis ‘multi star system political entities’ abound. Aaron
