Had a very cool scene happen last night in my Rippers game. I was running the adventure with a wereshark.
The party were escorting Tom Portman, the guy the wereshark was hunting, to safety at the New York Rippers lodge in a carriage. The wereshark attacked and bit the door off the carriage, but the Ripper hero within was able to keep its attacks from landing. The carriage driver freaked out and fled, so one of the other Rippers who has the Riding skill but not Driving, leaped onto the horse and kicked it to a gallop. To the Chase rules!
So the Rippers are in a carriage clattering at top speed down the dark cobblestone streets of Manhattan, being followed closely behind by a raging wereshark. Obsidian was the wereshark's silver, as it were, and the only weapons the team had were blunderbusses they loaded with obsidian chips. Dice conspired against them and even if they managed to shoot the shark they rarely rolled enough damage to even Shake it. Conversely, in the chase I rarely got a card good enough to let the shark attack the carriage! This went on for several rounds, and the players were really getting into the drama of the chase. It all came together very well, with the wereshark trying to catch up to the carriage and jump aboard, the heroes blasting away with blunderbusses from on top of and within the carriage, then spending time reloading (2 rounds!) or swiping at the shark with obsidian daggers if it was close enough, etc.
The shark did eventually jump onto the carriage and threw the two Rippers that were up there off. The guy who'd been using Riding checks on the horse told everyone to bail out and as they did he guided the carriage into a dead-end wall and jumped up to the carriage roof to grapple the shark. During their struggle he noticed the necklace the shark was wearing and tore it off (they had in their research learned that there was some significance to the necklace the shark was wearing, but they didn't know what it meant). That broke the curse, just as the carriage was crashing and sending that Ripper and the now human wereshark tumbling across the street.
I don't know if my rambling up there captured just how awesome it all was and how everything just came together...
