On long journeys I was saying "why isn't JiB talking about SW interludes?" And then he did.

fredrix Are you The One? Also, can you guys re-upload the podcast to Google Play? It appears that only the first nine minutes are accessable until the track ends. Stu Venable

(Though I don't use Google Play. Nine minutes in. The podcast cut dead. And shifted (in Overcast) to my played podcast. I re-downloaded it and fast forwarded (past the glitch I'm guessing) and it worked fine.

I had the same issue, it cut out around 10 minutes in. Deleted and re-download seems to have resolved it, by the sounds of it I wonder if the feed updated before the episode had finished uploading so any automatic downloads only got what was available at that point.

Something happened when I bounced the media file. I re-bounced it and it was replaced last night.

On the L5R quotes and using them to flesh out characters, or to set a 'default' personality...
I absolutely love that and will use that most likely in the L5R game I'm currently setting up. I'm glad you found a list of Shinsei quotes. From what I heard, some are actual quotes from the RPG or CCG, some are from some of the clan books etc, some are just zen sayings and some are just homemade but they all work.
For instance, one must always bow to aid a fallen man used to be the flavor text on the card for the ronin Akodo Toturi.

Awesome episode. Great tips and ideas! I'm working on an L5R campaign myself, but I doubt I will get to run it until next winter.

Just caught up on this one and had a few thoughts on travel.
The One Ring RPG has interesting abstract rules for travel that reflect hazards and fatigue. Although "wandering damage" is generally frowned on by this podcast, it is one way to handle the troubles of travel. Does a horse get sick? Does the party get lost in the woods, losing time and using supplies. Random might be better than GM fiat if travel is happening frequently.
Regarding horses and travel, I have read that unburdened fit runners can travel faster than horses over long distances. (I think it was in the book "Born to Run" but there are also several Internet references.) I guess the main benefit of horses in travel is carrying capacity and allowing the riders to become less fatigued. Over limited distances, of course, they can run faster than people, but I am not sure that real-world horses will get from point A to point B several days away any faster than moderately encumbered people walking on foot.

Wasn’t it the Incans or Mayans who had runners that would print from town to town delivering messages? It seemed like an inhuman feat at the time that I heard it.

I know I read that the Incans did, but they didn't have horses until the Spanish got here, and Alpacas won't let you ride them. (I think they sprinted not printed.)

I dunno about the Incas but I do know about the runners of Marathon. PheidippidesIm gonna go out on a limb and say that the peoples of ancient cultures were in better shape than we are, and from our lofty modern perch, we see their physical activities as super human. Even average people of the day would do daily routines that many "average" people today would consider impossible to do.

That's because they did everything manually, while we sit in front of a computer, sit in a truck or car, sit on a farm tractor, etc. and let machines do all the work. There are a few among us who do physical labor but even then, when you go home from work you sit and watch tv. We got big butts and I will not lie.
