A general comment for stork - I did catch the Joe Walsh reference in the beginning. Well done.

So you guys discussed an email from Sgt Dan where he talked about his elevator pitch for getting people into gaming. Mine is two part and its very simple. First I say that roleplaying is "adjudicated cooperative storytelling". Which usually warrants me a quirked eyebrow or something similar. So I go on then to say that "Multiple people sit around a table and tell a story. But so that one person doesn't take over and go God Mode, there are rules to telling the story. The GM arbitrates the rules and narrates all the non-player stuff while the players narrate what their character does." If at that point I see a glimmer of interest I go into an example roleplay scenario.
Me: When you leave here today what are you going to do? Them: Oh I'm going home and making dinner. Me: Ok, so lets take that step by step. You will leave here and what, go to your car I assume? Them: Yes. Me: Ok, so you'll get in your car and drive home. How good of a driver are you? Them: Well I've never been in an accident or had a ticket. Me: Ok, so a good driver. That means you would get a bonus for driving. At this point I'd have you roll some dice and add that bonus based on the rules of the game. If your roll beats the target number you drive home with no issues. If it doesn't then you might get into an accident or get a ticket or run out of gas or whatever I end up narrating. Get it?
That usually seals the deal one way or the other. In my experience it usually means that they will give it a shot. Why? Because it doesn't seem intimidating when you present it like that. If I'm the one actually running them through the game I will also usually make their character for them to take another level of intimidation away.
I get what Sgt Dan was trying to say, but like Rob said it was just too much. I used to try to explain games that way too, because there is so much to gaming that I enjoy I wanted to let them know all the cool stuff they could do and experience. And I rarely got someone to give it a shot that way. Now, I've pulled a ton of people into gaming using the above method.

Here's the video of nine british guys with their tackle out, if anyone was curious: Link only, as it's NSFW vimeo.com/117672124

Nowadays, I find the easiest way to explain what RPGs are is to say “They are like D&D, but about all kinds of stuff: detectives, sci-fi, historical drama, not just Dragons and not just in Dungeons”
Seriously, it feels like D&D has become so ubiquitous in popular culture that most people know of it, even if they haven’t played. I’ve actually started to explain it (I used to say something like “It’s let’s pretend but with rules”) and people have gone “Oh, you mean like Dungeons and Dragons.”

This Chainmail Bikini woman story is reminding me of a very tasteful song:

I think he wrote that song for SongFight.org.
He wrote some incredible stuff there (much of it made it to his CDs).
