that Danish video cracks me up every time. This is one of my favorite vids on what American English sounds like to non English speakers. What!? It was annoying as hell to listen closely, *almost* understanding, and then it slipped away again. I think I prefer Liverpudlian, as totally incomprehensible, although it's nominally English....

Languages: Ignoring them is bad; either a player has made that character choice or has paid XP for it. It's a bit off to ignore that facet of their character. On the other hand, having the game stall because of a language barrier is possibly worse. Additionally, having 'hi-larious' misunderstandings due to a language barrier is entirely subjective. Some people will love 'Allo 'Allo - style hijinks, others will absolutely hate it. I use languages as a social reaction modifier. If you speak to someone in their native language, they're probably going to be more disposed to listen to you than if you try the 'speak loudly and slowly in your own language' approach. I served with the Gurkhas in Afghanistan, and we had a lot less trouble due to our lads being able to converse in a common language, in this case Hindi-Urdu, Pashto or Dari. Just my thoughts on it.

My question would be what system does languages well enough that if you set up different languages that were not just based on race that you could engage the players with it?

My question would be what system does languages well enough that if you set up different languages that were not just based on race that you could engage the players with it? Would GURPS (YEAH!) do it? The Legend setting in Dragon Warriors had a language system I liked. Non-humans were very rare and not available a PC's (well, there were rules for playing dwarves and elves, if you like your dwarves to be violent xenophobes and your elves to soulless rat-finks). Languages were based on nationalities, and similar languages gave you a bonus if you tried to learn another. There were also scripts that were commonly used by different nationalities. For example, the Emirate of Marazid used Nascerine as its language, one of Marazid's neighbours, the Sultanate of Opalar used Opalarian as its language, but both used the Jezant script and alphabet. If you spoke Nascerine, it was easier to learn Opalarian because they were from the same family of languages. Not every character was multi-lingual or literate; it generally depended on your background, social status and country of origin, but it was possible to be fluent and literate in a couple of languages after character creation.
