Quick thought regards language and getting in cars vs onto buses. My guess would be that you get into a car because to do so you have to sit down whereas you get on a bus because, as Stu suggested, you can stand. Sitting may be an option but it's not mandatory like with a car.
Overall though I did love the discussion of use of language and I can definitely see how it would benefit a game done correctly but personally I'd struggle with running a game in the style that the letter did simply because it would require that I also had to be constantly thinking in that different manner. It would just be so unnatural that I expect I would be constantly messing up my descriptions.
Have fun at the con next weekend. one day I shall make it out again, my visit a few years ago was amazing and well worth it.

Regarding the cat sensors and languages. That was the exception. Most of the time the people saying making language an obstacle in your game won't be fun will be right.

Language has been an obstacle in the game I'm currently in, which has been on pause for a long time now. Those two things may be related, in that it might have become one obstacle too many when a small group of players without the adequate skills is supposed to get things done in a foreign culture. Preferably without attracting negative attention to themselves by raiding a temple and finding that it does not, in fact, contain either the deity they're looking to rescue, or the scary harbinger they've been tasked to kill.
On the subjects of Gungans not having (or at least using) their own language, that might perhaps be explained by them sharing their planet with humans. Presumably humans who came from space. So basically gods, given the Gungans' apparent low level of technology. So maybe the Gungans decided to adopt the language of the 'gods' early on, and hundreds of years later that's what they use?
