Good discussion on player/character secrets. Stu Venable began to touch on the issue, but didn’t quite get there. It’s not about old stool secret vs PBTA collaboration, it’s about genre. If you are playing a conspiracy game, you want the player thrill of discovering that one of the other players is working for the other side, either by good piecing the clues together, or when they double cross you.

I was listening to the show last night when I was working! And oh boy do I ever have a lot to say about fights and stakes and death and drama. But, this is looking like a dead horse... do I really want to help kick it while it's down?

I have a few horror stories from Chupacabracon I need to send in. Nothing more fun in a high powered godly con game than roleplaying being on vacation on a tropical island...

Giving my $.02 on player vs character secrets, I think a lot of it has to do with the stance of the players at the table. Stu often talks about immersion for his character. This is alongside an Actor stance, where as a player he wants to get into the head of the character, and therefore, knowing the secrets is going to ruin the discovery of said secrets. It will also diminish his enjoyment of the game because he is going to be worried about how to proceed with this OOC knowledge.
Playing from a writer or director stance, knowing the secret can be fun, because it allows you to play the character with the knowledge of what could happen. An example of this could be sleeping with the Human playbook character in Monster Hearts. You the player know that doing so will trigger your darker self. You can choose the path that is going to lead to the best drama for you or the table. You can also build the suspense at the table by dropping clues to it that the audience (i.e. the other players) will be able to cue in on. This is similar to some out of character knowledge that an audience member has. In the new BSG, we the audience know that Boomer is a Cylon, but she and the other Galactica crew does not. It can make the ribbing that people give her that she is a Cylon more oomph.
I don't think there is a "right way" to do it or it should be uniform across all tables and all games. Having some known and unknown secrets could be the way to go, based on the tastes of the table.

As far as the first President I remember... the first president I have solid memories of is Carter, but I think I have vague recollections of Ford.

I agree and a couple drafts of my email talked about that, but I decided I was getting long winded. In truth, I do have some secrets occur away from the table. It actually resulted the best plot twists. A a player secretly told me he was tired of playing his character and wanted him to die in the Montaigne Revolution. He and I worked out a much more complicated and surprising twist of him being captured by the mystery villain and joining forces with her to allow all the other players to escape an appointment with the guillotine.

I was thinking of Ford falling down the Airplane steps, but he has Chevy Chases' face, so it's probably a memory of Saturday Night Live. Oh, Oh my next post is the EVIL one. (This is 665)

There is footage of him slipping down one of those airplane ladders.
I remember the election night of '72. But only vaguely.

I remember watching Carter's inauguration. That's my first memory of a President of the United States.

The first I was aware of was Nixon, probably because of the press coverage for Watergate. It fell somewhere between the rising price of igloos and the poutine shortage on the Canadian news.

The first Prez I was aware of was Nixon also. It was people telling me all politicians are crooks, it's just that Nixon was caught. Right or wrong, that colored my world view for a long time.

The first president I was aware of was Reagan. The Iran contra thing happened when I was in the hospital for blood poisoning. My dad would watch the news on my tv while he visited me because i was only awake about 1/3 the time.
I sure had some interesting ideas about what an Iran was until I was like 20.
