So on the subject of con games I'm surprised everybody was so focused upon story over mechanics. On the rare occasions I do get to play games at cons I often seek out new systems to see what I think of the game. In those situation the mechanics are an important factor, I want to get a feel for how the mechanics flow and whether it's a game I'd be interested in buying.

Whether it is a new edition of rules or something completely different,I always want to try something new.

I think that the point of a one shot/con game in an unknown system is to use the system to highlight what it does best.
It's the whole "what does this system do better than another system" thought.

Stu Venable If you liked Dunkirk try to find someone with a great sound system or a theater showing it again. The sound was specifically crafted for immersion ( IMMERSION!) and it's kinda lost if you don't have the right setup.

Dunkirk was good. It would have been a lot better if they replaced all that stuff with boats and men on the beach with more spitfires.

Agreed, Dunkirk needs to be seen on as big a screen as possible with decent surround sound. I saw it in the cinema but came out wishing I'd seen it on IMAX.

I saw it at the BFI IMAX, where the sound system was set up by Chris Nolan himself. It was great. I saw it again with my daughter at s local cinema. Not as good.

The WWI movie from the German perspective was likely All's Quiet on the Western Front. Originally it was done in 1930 then they remade it in 1979 with John Boy (Richard Thomas). It is the most famous.
In terms of game scenarios I really like Sergent York (Gary Cooper), Hells Angels (directed by Howard Hughes), Lost Patrol (directed by John Ford), the Blue Max, the Red Baron (directed by Roger Corman), and Gallipoli (with a very young Mel Gibson).
But the best is Grand Illusion (which is a prison movie).

Shout out to Tappy for the random anime references. Vampire Hunter D is a classic!

Shout out to Tappy for the random anime references. Vampire Hunter D is a classic! Yes, it was the John-Boy All Quiet on the Western Front. Finished The Big Red One last night. A very young Mark Hamill. Also re-started Patton. That gave me an inspiration for a story game: "The Generals." Trying to gain glory over other rival generals during the conquest of a continent. I'm seeing it with a kind of Liar's Dice mechanic: "Which general can get me the most armored brigades against the enemy's left flank?"

The Big Red One is one of my favorite WWII movies. Some other classics are The Guns of Navarone, Force 10 from Navarone, Where Eagles Dare, The Longest Day, and Hell is for Heroes.

BRO was the first R-rated movie I ever saw in the theater. My dad took my brother and me to see it because my grandfather on my mother's side was in the 1st Division Infantry. He carried a grenade fragment in his back for over 30 years before he died in 1975.

@baldur that's a freakin' great story. Glad you got a high after that low in the game. Remember that people's actions frequently tell them more about them than they do about you. …and as Stu Venable said, who knows why the shy guy had to bail? It could've been anything! Your story had my grinning from ear to ear on the walk home tonight. Glad you were able to embrace "yes, and" to carry the day.

Chronovore. Thanks, the second time I ran it at GenCon 2017 it went the way I "thought" it would when I designed the one shot. I will admit I felt a little let down. Everyone had fun and they were a great group. The monkey wrench thrown by the first group was so much fun and made such an amazing narrative that I just enjoyed it more. I love this community and have learned much.
