So finally had my first Savage Worlds game, ever (as the subject notes). It was awesome!
So we've been playing some Pathfinder and Shadowrun 4th for a while, and lost a player to a cross-state move. Decided to run a couple one-shots until after the new year. First was a Witchcraft game, using the Unisystem rules. Meh.
But then, I convinced my better half to get the new Savage Worlds Deluxe. (Luckily, she's around once in a while for the podcast and gets to hear a lot of the Savage Worlds talk.) I was determined to run the game with a Yes And/Assume Little Details attitude, and decided to use Pinnacle's Slipstream setting (very Flash Gordon). I created the characters using the templates from the Pulp! setting, and advanced them to somewhere around Seasoned.
A brief intro to the basic mechanics of the system and off we went.
Started out as 1930-ish test pilots, who were about to test the Atmosphere Riding Space Exploring Orbital Lander, or A.R.S.E.O.L. for short; an experimental rocket plane designed to test the feasibility of leaving the earth's atmosphere, enter a low earth orbit, and return to Nellis AFB.
During the brief rocketing to the edge of space, something went wrong, and the ship started spinning out of control. They left the atmosphere and kept on going. While trying to fix the engine issue from inside the cabin, one of the PCs noted streaks of light, passing them, and an area void of stars above them.
They awoke among the broken wreckage of the A.R.S.E.O.L. and walked the short distance to the ruined jungle temple. There, they encountered the Raptor Men, but still assumed they were on Earth, somewhere in the Brazilian Rain Forest I think. They didn't outright attack, which I assumed they would, but rather engaged them for help fixing their ship. I kept trying to entice them deeper into the ruins with human-like screams, but they avoided the hook.
As they were leaving the ruins and heading back to the wrecked A.R.S.E.O.L. to facilitate repairs, one of the players (a rocketeer) flew up to the top of the ruins to look around. A ship of the evil Queen Anathraxa's minions arrived, and attempted to arrest them. They spotted the rocketeer player, assumed he was trying to escape, and tried to shoot him down. The rest of the players and the minions started trying to shoot each other, and eventually the players prevailed.
We had to end the session early, but all four of us had a blast. The system is easily picked up and run, with very little in the way of rules confusion. They're all looking forward to next weeks session, continuing the odyssey of the stranded A.R.S.E.O.L. test pilots.
