Just downloaded Mongoose Traveller's 'Strontium Dog' setting book (2000AD franchise . . . same stable as Judge Dredd). For those that like Traveller . . . it's a different take and NOT hard sci fi like classic traveller. For those that like Strontium Dog . . . suit up, mutie up, garb those warrants and bounty hunt . . . they've really caught the flavour of the SD Universe perfectly.
For those that don't know SD is set in a dystopian future where Mutants from previous nuclear wars are considered as less than second class citizens. Mutations take nearly any form from the subtle to the grotesque to the outright strange. The only job most mutants are legally allowed to hold (following a mutant uprising and accord, which resulted in the banishment from Earth of the uprisings leaders and/or those directly involved) is that of a Search and Destroy agent (SD) . . . a bounty hunter in other words. Because Strontium 90 was responsible for most mutations they are given the affectation Strontium Dogs.
I'm going to run a one shot next month . . . involving a time travel warrant to retrieve Margaret 'The Iron Lady' Thatcher for trial for her part in contributing to the inevitable global economic collapse which triggered the series of wars leading to the SD Universe (in the comic SD agents have been sent to retrieve Adolph Hitler, so it's in keeping with the flavour of SD). What the players don't know is that she is actually a mutant from their time who went back to change history but instead caused it . . . this made her go insane. Her mutation will be that she actually looks like her spitting image puppet in real life . . . having herself created the spitting image TV series to discredit the release of incriminating photos taken of her without her disguising makeup by an overly investigative journalist. The twist is in her madness she has come up with a new plan . . . to bomb the closing ceremony of the Olympics . . . while leaving evidence that she was a mutant. Her rationale for this is that in the SD Universe there is the anti mutant New Church (Nazi's basically) and it'll be assumed that MT is a founding member of the line of purity of it's leaders . . . such a reveal would condemn the New Church to obscurity forever . . . the Elite in the New Church is aware of this dirty secret thus one of the pregen SD agents will in fact not be a real mutant(unknown to the other players) but an agent of the New Church with specific orders to stop the retrieval of MT no matter what . . . this agent though is not aware that she is actually a mutant and as a New Churcher he will be rabidly anti-mutant ("but she's a founder member therefore? . . . argh head hurts") . . .
So I'll see how it runs . . . if the system doesn't let me down it'll be well worth the £10 for the Rules and the Bounties supplement (pdf) and proof of how versatile the Traveller system is.
