This is a ridiculous announcement. They are going to release playtest after playtest until the 40th anniversary? I believe that over-thinking a product spells its doom. I don't think there will be a 41st anniversary. thecheeseshop.org------ (Reliving the RPG Obsession Through GURPS)

Weren't people complaining that it was too soon? As long as they playtest it thouroughly I am ok; at 4e it was more of a demo that a real playtest, and that bit them in the ass since they did it for the low levels only and it turned up that at paragon/epic the game an unmitigated mess.

I know some that were saying too fast but too long lends to screwing things up. I mean when the writers and editors look at something so many times they lose perspective. I get that there needs to be play-testing however everyone will not be satisfied. Is Wizards really going to take input on the Cleric near the end of 2013? Is this a "last shot" at keeping D&D alive? thecheeseshop.org------ (Reliving the RPG Obsession Through GURPS)

I think they are torn between keeping their sacred cows alive (sorcerer, paladin, assassin etc.) and making each class unique. I think they should just get rid of those classes and incorporate them into existing ones, there is little difference between a cleric with a sword (give him a speciality that gives him one) and a paladin, thematically and mechanically. I would however like to see a more spell focused priest class than the 3e monstrocity that could cast mass destruction spells in full-plate armor. I believe, if a single thing would be their downfall is the fear of their own fans (that have proven to be very harsh).
However I have faith in Mearls since he is the one who gave us Iron Heroes, my favorite d20 thing ever, if one of the 4e guys was behind it I wouldn't even bother.

I find it more than a little interesting that a significant chunk of their revenue will be from selling pdfs that they were certain they just couldn't make money selling a year or two ago.

Not sure on copyright law, but I recall the necessity to keep something in print. Something along the line of exerting the author's rights. But I am not certain. Someone might check up on this bit of information to back me up or disprove me. If my information is correct, I will hold the opinion WotC has a motive other than marketing in doing this. WotC's previous marketing moves have all been to avoid canibalization.
