Hey I'm looking for a place to buy cheap fantasy minis, I'd prefer pre-painted plastic, not great at painting yet. I'm trying to pull together a collection and most places I see seem to be rather expensive, so if anyone happens to have any suggestions, or is interested in getting rid of their old mini's, help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had nothing but excellent results dealing with Auggie's online store. You might also check with your FLGS; mine has individual minis available on the cheap.

I like Wizkid's new heroes and monsters set of Pathfinder minis. I bought the entire set and they do a pretty credible job with them. I'm happy with them. JiB

I just hate that they did exactly what WOTC did and blind packed the damn things. That is precisely why I refuse to buy prepainted or prepackaged minis. I was a Magic: the Gathering addict for years, but refuse to do the collectable minis thing simply because when I buy minis, I want to know what the hell I'm paying for.

I bought one pack WOTC minis for poops and giggles. Other than that it's all been individual selections off of web sights. I just don't see why anyone would want to make a habit of buying mystery minis. I really like that when I throw a bunch of drow, devils, orcs, goblins, elementals or whatever else I've been throwing at my players the minis reasonably match the monster.

I completely concur, gandalf. In the entire run of WOTC's twenty-one separate DDM collection releases, I think I bought a grand total of three booster packs. I've never played the collectible mini game associated with them, either; they were just a great, inexpensive way for me to build up a huge-ass mini library.

I jsut hate that they did exactly what WOTC did and blind packed the damn things. That's a valid point. I did end up with several duplicates that I could have lived without, but what I wanted out of it was mob minis and monsters that I didn't have. Does anyone ever have enough orc, goblin, skeleton or zombie minis? Quality wise I'm pretty satisfied with them for prepainted minis. JiB

What I am always wanting and never finding is a huge pack of goblins, orcs, skeletons etc. I hear Wotc's next mini line may offer such things. I remain hopeful.

I got lucky there - my plastic mini collecting craze began when I stumbled onto a clearance sale. I snatched up a ridiculous amount of goblins (about a hundred) for about $0.15 each! Sadly, those kinda prices aren't available any more (though I'm sure that makes my bride happier since I'm far less likely to buy minis nowadays).

JiB I can't fault the quality, but I refuse to buy blindpacked figures. If I want goblins, skeletons, zombies, etc, I want them and not some random monster that I am likely to never ever use. I have dozens of minis that I will likely never put on the table because I will never use that monster and or I just don't like the look of the figure. Thankful plenty of sites open the boxes and sell singles, but the markup can get ridiculous on the "rare" figures. The fact that I can buy box sets of goblins, skeletons, etc in pewter but not in plastic blows my mind. You give me ten goblins, maybe three different molds, prepainted and I will buy it. Same for the other common mob monsters. Then put the more unique monsters in another with a higher price. This blind packed thing jsut makes people less likely to buy direct and instead wait for someone to open them up and buy from a dealer.

I've learned to enjoy the hunt for good cheap pre-painted minis.
I was at a toy show a few months ago with my kids and picked up 2 huge bags of MageKnight minis for $3 a bag. Some MK minis look horrible, but some look pretty good, so I just re-base them. MK is cheap because noone wants them anymore, same as a WOTC line called DreamBlade. They droped the line, noone wants it, so it's cheap (I re-base those too), and some of those minis are mind-blowingly awesome. And, there's other lines that are out of favor.
I've bought some blind-packs when I found them cheap enough ($6-$10), but I hate not knowing what I'm getting and I'll only do it when I know there is a very good chance of getting minis I don't already have. I think starting out, ebay or Troll and Toad lots are the way to go. Yeah I've got minis I might never use, but you never know. After starting out with a clump-o-minis, fill in as needed with singles, but stay away from the expensive rare figs.
Another thing is buy-back programs. I bought a case of the new Pathfinder minis from Miniature Market for $200. Of the 100 minis or so in the case I'll sell back 20 or 30 of the ones I don't want, and keep the one I do.
Don't know if that helps anyone, but that's my 2 cents.
