So, I have created myself a re-useable battle mat with nothing more than a 11"x17" two sided page, with a grid on one side, and hexes on the other.
However, I realized that I might need a bigger map!!!
Since we will be playing the Savage Wierd War 2 setting, for an upcoming mission, they will be using the Fire Support rules.
Short version: They will be able to call artillery, though with not much accuracy.
The burst templates are rather large, and I did some minor testing (doing more this week) -- it seems like it is possible for many of the enemy extras to be wiped out in one fell-swoop!
However, if I draw my own map on a larger board -- then the spread of the enemies will counteract the PCs ability to just clear the board with one well-placed call.
Is there something else that would work to deal with this ability?
Does it need to be tested more?
I'd love some input from you!!
Thanks!

Idea: have the mission be in enemy territory and add-in Extras as-needed

you will want a bigger map if you are using one inch hexes and squares you are going to be very limited in what you can do with 11x17 squares. You could also give them reasons not to use the artillery if you are going in to rescue someone or grab a mcguffin the last thing they will want to do is blow it up.
Having said that I also think you should allow them to go all out with it some times and just clear the field let them feel like gods of the battlefield.... until the return artillery fire starts falling on them. I think you would have much more fun with it on a larger map though.

Draw your map in 1/4" scale (standard graph paper) and then take it to your favorite Office Depot or similar and have them copy it and blow it up 400% on the plotter that they have for just this sort of thing. Voila full scale map in the same scale you will need for minis.
Alternatively, Gamer Paper is a cheap and easy substitute. I like it for cons because if the map gets torn up who cares, and I like to have the players sign the map at the end of the game. I keep them as a remembrance.
Cheers,

If the PCs are attacking the other side will most likely be dug in this should reduce the area of a blast by 1/2 to 1/4 size Pill boxes pretty much need a grenade, flame thrower,bazooka/tank round through the gun port or a direct hit by 155mm arty
