I just finished listening to the episode last night and It was a lot of fun, quite the nail biter. It's hard to write about it without including spoilers I was amazed how the ride back to Runjiro's Compound from the tainted lands, and the immediate aftermath turned out I was sure that the samurai three has finally bitten off more then they could collectively chew in dealing with the mystery behind the Tainted Crop lands. I found Myself cheering for them at the end of he battle I have to say that Shiro Futsuka "Two day Castle" has a Nice ring to it And I knew it was Ueda the minute Stu said "you see a Big Samurai kneeling in the mud" Great Episode Guys and Stu nice job on the descriptions turning the battle - Midnight

Great episode and don't forget your guy does not have to rely on just Samurai and Ronin to fill out his army he can get some Budoka and Ashigaru.

I hearby adopt Tyler into the Hida family. He does us proud. ^.^
If you're interested, maho practitioners are known as maho tsukai. It's not gender specific.
Stu did a fantastic job of making the taint creepy as all hell. Serious kudos.

I just started session 4 of the L5R game and it is awesome! Stu, don't you let this freak'n game die! LOL! I'm glad to see I get to hear at least a total of 6 sessions; NO SPOILERS! After I listened to the first episode I bought the book and I am a HUGE Savage Worlds gamer (and still am) but man this game is just sweet. One of the things I like which I think SW has in it as well, is that it is deadly and promotes smart (hopefully) role playing and the actual combats themselves are NOT the focus.
And I don't know if you covered this yet or not but as a Japanese martial arts instructor of koryu (ancient) budo which includes Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and Ono Ha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu (for 10 years+) I thought I would help with some of the weapons you guys were questioning in the game. A war fan is generally a tessen. A spear is a yari. A bow would be your "kyuu." A katana blade on a staff is generally a naginata and was used by women in defense of castles while the male samurai were out in the field or used by men in the field to stop mounted samurai (they cut the legs off the charging horses). The suffix "-jutsu or jitsu" is used do denote "...the art of" while a "-do" (pronounce dough) is more of a philosophical approach or a sports approach. Kendo vs. Kenjutsu is a good example, Kendo is a sport while Kenjutsu is the battle field "art" or "application" of practice. Is one better than the other? Well Kendo came about so they could have duels but not kill each other and having done both for years I would not want to get hit by either one! HAHA!
Anyway love the episodes and keep it up. Not only does it appeal to me as a gamer but something I have been doing for many, many years as a hobby and a profession (I'm not a Secondary Science Teacher so go figure).

That's purdee! The compass is new to my CC3 eyes. Stu is your map a small scale version of a larger scale "official" world map from the book? (I am not asking for comparison sake but more about your style of map handout. Do you give handouts of smaller scale to players who also have access to a larger scale map? Is it part of your prep? Is that what you have done here?) And what is the scale you use in comparison to the world map - if such a thing exists in L5R? What happens if players travel off your map, for example? More handouts? How do you handle it when players move off the map down the road? Are they on their own in uncharted territory....? Thjose simple rice fields look great. Nice, simple touch.

I've been catching up on this game as well, doing a back-to-back marathon of the episodes. It really makes me want to try out L5R, though I don't know how well that would go over with my group.
The map is definitely cool! But where's the port city ... Murasabishitoshi, or however you spell it? ;D
By the way, I was surprised by the comment at the end of this episode that Stu was playing a lot of regularly recurring NPCs .. four! It didn't seem like a large number to me, and it also didn't seem like he was in danger of needing to have NPC-on-NPC conversations. What's the usual expectation for your games? Are there are a lot of games where all the major scenes are PC-only, and NPCs only appear when the PCs need to question them or something?

Generally, NPCs don't come in until the story demands it or the PCs seek them out. If things need a push or a clue or plot hook has to be introduced, they're there. Renjiro's kind of an exception. In some ways, he's the reminder about bushido. When the party ran back to their keep with their tail between their legs after the first fight with the zombies, I used Renjiro to push them back out there.
With regards to the number of NPCs, I was looking at my list of NPCs that have been introduced. There are a lot of them. So many, I have killed at least one and forgot I did it.
If I could draw, I would make portraits of them and hang each one up in the studio as they are introduced.

I thought the village of Tetsubo was to the north, or is the compass rose wrong?

The short answer is that the compass rose is wrong.
