I recently picked up GURPS traveller, trying to see what rules system I would want to learn if I were to run a Sci-Fi space game....Looking at the sample characters, The rules system seems to be a great fit for it, but I don't have, no have I ever read the core book. How difficult is it for a veteran GM of Pathfinder/D&D to learn GURPS well enough to create a setting from the ground up?
I've read the GURPS light rules, but that is the extent of XP I have with gurps.

It is not that hard to create a setting with this game. When I was a young GM, I was creating settings with it all the time, while learning it. I was pretty ambitious but I think it help me learn the game faster. Question like : how space travel works in GURPS lead you naturally to what you need for your game. Since GURPS uses real word terms it's easy to create world that feel real. As a game, GURPS is not hard to learn. Really you just have three system to remember: - Roll under your (skills/attribute/self control number) to succeed. - Roll high for damage. - Roll 3d6 + social modifiers for reaction, look on the table. The rest is optional. Really. But as you go along things will start to make sense. Impaling damage? Yeah they are kind of nasty, sure they make twice as much damage! Shock penalty? Yeah when you receive a punch in the face you are not as pristine to response in the following second because of confusion. Etc. etc. Best way to learn GURPS is to teach it to your players. Start with the basic stuff and introduce a new thing each session. My players were playing superheroes cops, so at the beginning of each sessions their chief ordered them to do a practice. One week it was shooting practice by popping from cover (introducing Snap Shot Penalty). The week after it was shooting automatic weapons (introducing rate of fire and volley/spraying). The week after was judo lessons (introducing grappling rules). Etc. After a summer my players were quite proficient with GURPS. One step at a time. Choose what rule matters to you and use it. Leave the rest.

Thats a pretty cool way of teaching a system. I like it! I might just have to shell out for the GURPS book if I can convince my players to do something other than Pathfinder Do you suggest any splat books (like GURPS space or something?) or just use the core rules?

To do a GURPS Traveller like game I would ideally use these books (in order of importance): GURPS Basic : Characters GURPS Basic : Campaigns GURPS Space GURPS Spaceships GURPS Ultra-Tech But again, all those are not required. You can do vehicles combat with spaceships with just the Campaign book, and you have stats for basic futuristic weapons in the Characters book. It's easy enough to take a blaster pistol raise the damage and call it a blaster rifle. You can always ask us, GURPS experienced gm's to help you with things you don't have. We always love to help. To convince your players sometimes it's just a matter of talking to them about things that motivate you and things you would like to try. Remember, when you buy a GURPS book, you can use it afterward for any other type of campaign and with any other game system. I often still use my GURPS Low-Tech when I play Pathfinder to understand the available technology of medieval times. And how often time I used my GURPS Space to generate a solar system and then create a fantasy setting on one of the planet.
