Wanted to write a bit back to Clockwork Monk. In the game I play in, my character has a phobia of fire. I get absolutely no advantage for having this (mechanically), but I constantly wish it would be brought up in game as well as the fact that my character wears a mask that covers half her face. It never does. No NPCs ask about it and there are never fire traps, or pits of fire, or fire slinging mages. It makes me really sad. There's never even a reason for anyone to see her without the mask. No surprises while bathing, no breaking into private inn rooms.
tl;dr Use it. Your players want you to and as Stu said, it's your duty if they're getting a mechanical advantage.
BTWz, the idea of the Moors was FANTASTIC. This is almost exactly what I was going for. The country with this culture has a Venice like city so I've been telling the players, "It's kinda Arabian, and kinda Venetian, and kinda Persian, all put together." I really know nothing at all about the Moors, so I'll have to do some research. I had tried the food thing and had thought about the music thing. Will have to give that a go to see if it helps. At the very least, images of the Moors and reading about their culture has given me ideas about how to better describe things. The idea for smells seems good, too. I'm thinking of grabbing some incense to burn or putting some cloves in the oven before we start...

Stork - burning wheel is a game system. Wheel of time is an inordinately long book series. (Which has ended Stu - they brought in a living author and gave him Robert Jordan's notes and such.)
The worst thing about the series is the lack of editing. Get to the point already. I did finish it, but it turned into a chore a book or three ago.
As far as system goes, I would go with FATE. Who died? No one. Well, none of the major characters. Here are some aspects
Rand - The dragon reborn Hunted by the forsaken Memories of a crazy man I have 3 wives
Matrim Cuathon Memories of tacticians past The dark ones own luck I will save moraine Tokens from the land of fox people Leader of the band of the red hand Prince of ravens
Perrin Reluctant wolf brother Hammer or sword? Faile, my love I will do what must be done
As far as the magic goes, you could base it off Dresden Files. Basically, the people who have a lot of magic pay for it with FATE pointe, so they are more easily compeled as they want FATE chips for later. Those not so front loaded on powers get more FATE chips so they have more freedom, narratively. I mean you'd have to throw in some other stuff, but it could work.
I'm sure you could make GURPS work as well.

Ahoy Bastards! A reply to HeavyMetalJess's email...I 2nd the use of music to help create a nice "we are not in Kansas anymore" immersion moment. Check out the various "Call to Prayer" tracks out on the nets; really beautiful haunting pieces of music. I haven't heard it mentioned as a great go to here yet, but I really enjoy having a SPOTIFY account (Netflix for music but with a shit ton more selection). If you really need to hear some amazing Japanese flute tracks accompanied by what has to be some of the finest haiku's given by a guy from Alaska portraying a fictional world samurai who has twin named Hida Yama check out Sir Guido's L5R actual play podcasts (psst...the flute track came from SPOTIFY.) Also, along the lines of trying to have an arabic/middle eastern/islamic feel without getting lost in "Arabian Nights" check out the Ottoman Turks (my new band name). My Pathfinder game features a crusaders vs muslim style theme with Elves as the decadent magic heavy crusaders/ottomans and the dwarves as desert hardened "fremen" like zealots. I also recommend the book Empires of the Sea by Roger Crowley. Its actual history but with cannonballs blowing the heads off of armor clad knights it reads like kick ass fiction. Lots of information about the Ottoman Turks and their conquest of much of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Also, how close we came to all wearing pointy hats and having our cities look like this.... Which in some ways wouldn't be such a bad thing...Right ? Here's my campaign as it occurs on Obsidian Portal (which is a fuckin great game tool!) www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-awakening-of-the-desert-kingCheers and sufficiently caffeinated yours, Curt J.

I love that Stu's Gandalf sounds vaguely like Walter Matthau On emotion and immersion: Drawing from my own experience and what I've heard on many a gaming podcast, it seems that the goal of immersion is commonly linked with an approach to character not unlike method acting (i.e., creating in one's self the thoughts and feelings of one's character, in pursuit of a lifelike experience). Pushing a player's buttons is arguably part of this approach. That said, a thought experiment follows: Does gaming have its analogue for classical acting? What does it look like? Is immersion also its goal? As needed, refer to Marathon Man anecdote used by Stork in one or more previous episodes.

Texas has something I stole for myself and freakin' love. Its BBQ Spaghetti. Get some pulled pork, some BBQ and add spaghetti. Hey it worked for pizza, why not other Italian things?

Nothing barbecued belongs on pizza.
No ham and pineapple either.

Chili belongs in bowls. Or on hamburgers and hot dogs. Also on a nice tamal.

I was at the Broadway Diner in Columbia, MO once and had a 'stretch'.
Hash browns, eggs, chili, cheddar cheese, green peppers and onions.
Sounds pretty gross, actually delicious.
You can see it on the Menu on UrbanSpoon. (last page)

That sounds amazing. I will have to try making that some time. I was at the Broadway Diner in Columbia, MO once and had a 'stretch'. Hash browns, eggs, chili, cheddar cheese, green peppers and onions. Sounds pretty gross, actually delicious. You can see it on the Menu on UrbanSpoon. (last page)
