OK, say I have to learn FATE by actually reading it instead of playing it with someone who knows it.
What is the easiest way to do this because to my little brain Dresden sure as hell isn't it (though the goal is to eventually run Dresden).

I still haven't played any incarnation of the game, but I've read through some of Spirit of the Century, and I found it to be pretty straight forward.
You might also look through the old FATE 2.0 pdf, which I believe is free.
Have you looked for a FATE actual play?

Bulldogs is a really nice Fate implementation. Probably the closest you'll get to fate core, except for fate core. Plus, it's a fun read, and not overly painful on the pocket.
I like SotC as well, but it's page count is significant.
As far as actual play goes, then gutter skypes had some good SotC games and a pretty long and very entertaining Starblazer Adventures game. Those are the APs that stand out to me.

The basic core of FATE goes like this. I want to perform an action, doesn't really matter what it is the basic rule is always the same. Choose a skill and roll 4d6 fudge/FATE dice. You then have the option of of invoking an Aspect and spending a FATE point to either reroll or add +2 to the skill roll. You gain more FATE points by causing complications for yourself either by letting the GM compel your aspects or by compelling them for yourself. Similar to playing to your disadds in Savage Worlds or GURPS. One reason for its page count is that it uses lots of example to explain how the different concepts and mechanics of the system work. It takes a little time to wrap your head around how the system works simply because it is so different from your average RPG. I have found that people who have never played an RPG seem to pick it up extremely quickly though. Likely because they aren't comparing it to anything else. Dresdan does add some new wrinkles with the magic system, but the core mechanics are still fairly simple. Also I think Actual People Actual Play did some Dresdan Files actual plays, though I'm not sure how many or where they are buried in their archive.

I have found some actual play of Dresden, but it didn't help except for some of the background creation stuff. Maybe checking out the SotC ones will help. tentagil - it seemed really straightforward until it started going beyond the initial concept. Social rolls scare the piss out of me for some irrational reason...though awesome cheat sheet. Helps somewhat. Thank you. I may troll about the online games forum for a one shot fate game too. If HyveMynd can teach me Dungeon World, I can learn FATE. I keep telling myself that.

If you did not get in on the Fate Core Kickstarter the new Fate Core should be out soon to everyone on a pay what you like scheme for the pdf. It is much more streamlined then Dresden or even spirit of the century. the podcast Dice Heroes has a wildwest ap with Fate Core which I have not had a chance to listen to much yet. The first episode breaks done the basic rules and I believe creates the characters.

Hey all, I'm somewhat in the same boat. I'm supposed to GM a game of FATE for my friends sometime soon. Read the book, I think I have a good gasp on how to be a player. Any suggestions/resources for running the game.
If this helps, its a modern day, supernatural, mystery game and I'm used to running SW games for my friends.

I highly recommend starting with FAE (Fate Accelerated Edition) You can find a free download of it and FATE Core here: www.evilhat.com/home/fate-core-downloads/Why start with FAE? Because its a distilled version of what FATE is. Bare bones and ready to play in what is literally a pamphlet on steroids (50 pages total). No skills and no attributes. With FAE you can explore the core concept of Aspects and the Actions that drive the game. But here are a few points I think are key to paradigm shift that you need to go through to move on from more traditional game systems to Fate. The game meta is skewed to the players favor on purpose. Characters are made to be awesome and win. This can be a little off putting to a lot of people that are used to the idea that task resolution is a central way to create drama. In Fate, dice rolls are not really designed to determine success or failure. They exist to determine what price the hero has to pay to achieve his/her goal. Drama is primarily generated by the use of Compels. They are the main tool you have for generating conflict in your story. There are no critical hits or critical failures there are invokes and compels. It's no longer up to the whim of the dice. That's Fate. Once you run a few games in FAE, move on to Core. It's a little more like a traditional RPG but everything you learned in FAE still applies. It's like starting with an automatic and moving on to a stick. It's a little trickier but you get more control over the car. Then you can pick up the Toolkit and really customize your ride.

Fate's just different to run. In my experience, you'll want to limit group size, since the rubber meets the road with the compels, and most of those are initiated by the GM. In no particular order, here are my tidbits of advice:
1. Write your adventures and so on from the aspects that your characters (and collaboratively built campaign items) have. It's pretty easy to start the session with specific compels for each character to get them on track.
2. Encourage the players to self-compel as much as possible.
3. It's hard to kill characters in Fate, so you might as well try.
4. Use the four things you roll dice for (attack, defend, overcome, and create an advantage). Think of every roll in terms of one of those four things.
5. Encourage players to create advantages. For most, it is the least obviously important thing that they can do, but it's critical to making Fate shine, especially in a conflict.
6. Railroading is less obvious when you're compelling characters to get them back on track, though you may have to think pretty creatively about that.
7. Think about double entendres and other little tricks about language. Aspects are linguistic units, and you have to think about them in those terms.
