Thinking about immersion and setting scenes that just draw you in and get you ready for SHIT TO GET REAL...I often think about what piece of music might capture the feel I'm looking to convey and in my mind an L5R game that opened with a scene like this would have me drooling for the coming action:
Cheers and domo arigato!

I don't have speakers, so I can't hear the sound, but I'm assuming that's Tomoyasu Hotei's music.
I have that CD. It's never occurred to me to use it in an L5R game... that might have to change.

Yep. That is one of my all time favorite Tarantino scenes. Lucy Liu has that look on her face like she OWNS the place and everyone in it and you'd better not fuck with her. Meanwhile the Crazy 88's are backing her up with these fucking fantastic expressions that convey such ominous potential. YOU KNOW that something BIG is going to happen and the tension and the FUCK YEAH sensation just builds and builds with that score backing it up.
I am a huge proponent of finding music to help create the RIGHT feel in a scene I'm trying to set up.
I'm putting an actual play of our Pathfinder games together and I really want King Crimson's The Court of the Crimson King to be used as an intro. It conveys all the crazy chanting, ritualistic, poetic fantasy I want in that game. Does itunes shoot you down if there is any copyrighted, owned material on a podcast ? I know we've discussed including material that someone else owns as not cool...but if its a free podcast?

If the copyright holder decides to assert their claim, iTunes will probably remove you.

I did something like this! I've been working with a couple of guys on character creation in a homebrewed, Firefly-inspired (but not exactly the same) universe Traveller game. When we got the characters more or less finished up, I played this in the background while I explained the broad-strokes universe. They loved it. They loved it so hard.

Very cool. I'd play in that world!
I've been toying with the jukebox function in roll20 and its a nice way to put some ambient music in my games. But take any of your favorite scenes from a movie and turn the sound off and how much of its power gets lost? Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Pee Wee's Big Adventure...
I like to think (especially with more and more of our games getting recorded.) what kind of scene are we creating for the listener ? Are there understandable, engaging details ? Is it evocative, engaging ? Would the listener be bored with what is going on ? If so...what would make it more interesting, engaging?
If a listener would be bored, chances are the players might be drifting as well. If a listener is sucked into an engaging, captivating story I bet the players are on the edge of their seats also.
I'm excited by this bloom of AP's. I think it helps keep our games sharp and innovative. Did I mention ENGAGING?
Cheers.

I put it in general discussion but I'll repost it in L5R thread just 'cuz it makes me feel all funny (like when I used to climb the rope in gym class) every time I watch it....
Here's a trailer for my character's illustrious/ignominious/sleepy? return....
BANZAI!!
