On Far West.
Likely Cubicle 7 has assumed the responsibilities of Gareth in regards to the rpg game. Gareth is, I believe, Line Developer for Far West now. (or something like that). I would say the Kickstarter board is still the place to hassle them.
Honestly, i fear that when the pdf shows up I won't do much more than download it. My desire for this game has gone to virtually nothing.

Ya, I keep an eye on the KS page and I'm on the Far West forums, which have certainly quieted down over time. Rationally, I know Cubicle 7 is a solid company, but I also thought the same of Adamant when I went for the KSer.
I was ready to go full-on Wharrrgglllebarrrggllee when I saw the announcement that the special limited edition would no longer be special or limited. I'm glad I let the day go by before shooting my mouth off. Still, I worry there may be a "pray I don't alter it further" moment yet to come.
My interest is still high, but it may end up collecting dust for me, too. It would have been awesome to have it a year or so ago, before my group fell apart.

On the subject of making magical items special- I think the best experience I had with magic items that meant something to me was the 3.5 game where the magic items were few and far between. The magic items we did have leveled with us. The "magic items" we did find were with limited use items or were things we could use to augment our existing magical gear.
On the subject is Dresden Files magic items. Well I'm not so far along in the books but I would point out that the magic item in that world are either HUGELY IMPORTANT ARTIFACTS (Sword of the Cross), one off items (Sunbeam In A Handkerchief), or not inherently magical items that the magic user uses as a focus (which kind of goes back to the one off items).
