So, a bit of a confession here. I've never even cracked open an L5R book to glance at its contents. I know. Shame on me. I have been enjoying listening to the Actual Plays on the Happy Jacks stream however. Though I imagine I'd enjoy listening to them play anything. Even F.A.T.A.L. or Synibarr. Anywho, as Rokugan seems to be heavily inspired by feudal Japan, I thought I'd throw this out there as possible inspiration. It's a website of nearly 100 ghosts, goblins, monsters, spirits, and other supernatural entities from Japanese folklore. Most of the entries have a cool illustration depicting the beastie, as well as descriptions of what they are and what they do. Some of them might be usable as antagonists for L5R games, while others are probably best used as rumors or as folktales the characters hear in game.

It might be a bit pedantic, but just to be specific, it's a mix of Japan, China, and India.
Without anything to support these numbers, I would guess it to be a very rough mix of around 65/25/10, with India's contribution rising sharply lately due to the current storyline.

Those are the three that the developers always reference as significant contributors. For certain there are other influences. The Moto family, for instance...

And just to be even more pedantic, you'll notice I said "heavily inspired by", not "totally inspired by".

Shifting away from the pedantry that website looks pretty awesome, think I'll need to have a look through it and see if I can incorporate it into my L5R game (if it ever gets going).

On the subject of being inspired... I was going to say a bunch of stuff but let's just get down to brass tacks. Today this link popped up on my Facebook feed. www.kino-wasou.co.jp/20taiko.htmlIt's a video of a woman demonstrating how to properly fold and put on an obi by yourself. Not only do I appreciate the ability to don such an elegant and complex article of clothing without help, but the way she goes about each step appears much of the time as if she's doing some kind of kata. The friend who posted the link to the video pointed this out and one of the responses from a friend of hers was, "Japan: If it's worth doing, it's worth ritualizing." Which struck me as a very profound and useful thing to have read.
